Stuff&Junk

May 22, 2009 16:41

I'm sitting @one over at UNR, just spent a couple hours updating profiles, job hunting, making updates and doing some research on the side.  Yesterday was quite a day.  I woke up at 5:15 and made breakfast.  Oatmeal.  Packed my lunch, a PB&J and a piece of banana bread.  Then it was off to CS.

I was assigned to UNR for the second day in a row.  The work is at the equestrian center.  It isn't quite as captivating as working at the zoo but it's good work.  Allen was the guy in charge of us and through the course of the day I learned that he's accepting a job for the USDA as a result of the center being shut down.  He has a sincere love for horses in his life and is dissapointed to see the place getting shut down.

Apparently, due to a combination of a lack of interest and a poor teaching staff, the ag. department has been cutting the Equine Science focus for that particular major.  No new students could enroll in the major as of 2007 and once this group departs, the center and the program will be shut down.

The banner for the downsize seems to be budget cuts but according to Allen, it's only the manager's salary that is paid for by the school.  The revenue generated by the clients pays for all the other costs.  It's just a matter of not wanting to file all the extra paperwork apparently.

There's probably allot more to the equation than that but the bottom line is it's going away.  I remember almost every time I've ridden a horse and look back on every experience fondly.  The year I graduated, the family took a trip down to Big Bend National Park in Texas and we rode horses over the border into Mexico for a day.  On my honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas, we rode horses down the beach.

There were three of us yesterday and we got done with cleaning the stalls before lunch so we got tasked with landscaping for the rest of the day.  Marco, one of the other workers, told me about his experiences at the center as well as how he wound up with the CS.

We left at about 2:20 and got a ride back to the parking structure.  I still don't know what to call it.  It's the big building across from the Aces stadium.  There's parking but also a number of offices upstairs.  Anyway, I got a call from Abe and we went to do some river rafting.  That was a blast.

It took me 8 minutes to bike home and I got changed and loaded up with the guys.  We tried to figure out where to drop in.  First, we went to the Chrissie Caughlin Park off of Idlewild.  That's about as far west as the river-walk goes.  That wasn't far enough for Abe.  He wanted to go clear up to Mayberry for a three hour float.  We compromised and dropped in a little bit before Mayberry, a little closer to downtown than he wanted.

The guys had matching rafts and an air mattress for me.  Looking at it, I didn't quite know what to think.

Running out of time.  Sorry for not putting in dialogue or more interesting descriptions.  It's 4:54 and the lab's closing in five minutes.

So we rode the rapids.  It was a blast.  We got done and went through the adolescent cluster-fuck of trying to organize an event that comes with hanging out with college students.

Bryce just had to show me up by getting box seats.  It's good on him though.  Justin and I enjoyed the tickets I won for GA.

So for today, I slept in, made pancakes and hashbrowns and made my way up to the library.
