3.15 Performance Analysis

1. Sorry I'm not sorry.

2. THIS BE SPOILERS FOR 3.15. Only for the already aired performance, but if you are super jumpy about spoilers, don't click on this!

Other than that, enjoy the use of my brighten tool and some screencaps.

There are a couple of things I think we should talk about, though, just in general:

A) Blaine sings the girl parts of this song. (This isn't surprising. The sky is blue, grass is green, and Blaine Anderson sings girl songs un-ironically. Still worth discussing, perhaps)

B) The doll butt

C) The color blue

D) This is a breakup song.

OKAY LET'S GET STARTED!

We start with Blaine Anderson looking sad. We don't know what's going on, but he's not happy about it.

In contrast, Kurt looks like he just won the lottery. The "my boyfriend has a super hot older brother" lottery. Blaine continues to look unamused.

Kurt's expression reads to me as "God I love that idiot. What a precious goober." Blaine looks like he is either going to punch something or cry. Maybe both.

, what does blue symbolize? Because this scene uses blue lighting an awful lot.

Also interesting is that Blaine enters the stage not from either side, but from the back where the musicians are. Also interesting is that Cooper enters the stage from the center as well, this time from the audience. Maybe the Anderson are just destined to be front and center, who knows?

Almost as soon as Blaine starts singing, he gets drowned in blue light. What does it *mean*?

Cooper is already in the audience, waiting for Blaine. Did he know he was coming? Did he know Blaine was going to start singing?

My guess is no, because Blaine looks pretty annoyed the second Cooper butts in and starts singing, too.

A still pic doesn't do it justice, but he sort of shakes his head once Cooper starts singing, like he can't believe his brother is stealing his spotlight *again*.

Cooper just looks so confused.

No, seriously, he honestly does not understand why Blaine is mad. Why are you mad, bro? Also, why are we singing a breakup song?

"I DON'T EVEN NEED YOUR LOVE!"

...Yes you do. You need his love, Blaine. You've needed it your entire life. You need everyone to love you, who are you trying to kid?

THINGS ARE GETTING EMOTIONAL, TIME TO WHIP OFF THE MAN-PURSE.

Cooper is still super confused, and also a little hurt I think? Blaine, why don't you love him?

To be fair, Blaine is also hurt.

filed under: ridiculously attractive shot of Darren Criss, and also one of my favorite Glee transitions ever.

SO LET'S TALK ABOUT THAT FLASHBACK, SHALL WE?

The Anderson house looks so *old*. How old are their parents? I'm starting to get the feeling that their parents are also old enough to be their grandparents, because their house is just old-timey looking.

Also that wallpaper is ugly. What sort of design is that? I can't tell.

Their curtains have sailboats on them.

(Also, I failed to get a screenshot of it, but they have a piano with a trophy on top of it in the middle of the living room.)

Let's zoom in and look at Blaine's toys.

Blaine is playing with:

- a raccoon
- a car
- another, bigger car (I think?)
- a wooden block
- a pink hairbrush
- and a Ken doll.

Oh baby.

Also, baby Blaine is wearing pink. Pink, which is a traditionally feminine color. , what does pink symbolize?

Baby!Blaine is grabbing baby!Cooper's arm, trying to get his toy back. Cooper specifically says "No, stop, get away from me!"

The doll's pants are also off.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Did Cooper catch Blaine "examining" his doll and freak out? Or did the actor slip and the doll's pants fell a little and the director was hoping no one noticed?

INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW.

Okay back to the present.

Blaine is practically screaming at Cooper during the song.

Also there is a random red light what the hell.

Cooper is literally about to burst into tears.

Blaine is screaming at him again. Also notice: Blaine is not blue, but Cooper still is.

Oh wait, Blaine is blue again. Cooper is not crying, but rather looks like he might start screaming too.

The brothers are talking by singing.

And by singing, we mean not looking at each other.

Because actual confrontation, discussion, and anger is bad, yo.

(but maybe we can sing about it.)

(also the only song that encompanies all Blaine feels for his brother is a breakup song.)

They only look at one another with genuine emotion when they think the other one isn't looking back.

(evidence)

Avoiding confrontation is an Anderson Family Tradition.

ow those are feelings. How did those get here?

They literally cannot stand to be near each other. They are as far from one another on stage as possible.

Alternatively, here they are equal. Equally apart, maybe, but equal.

The cowardly Blaine finds his courage, though, and sings to his brother while looking at him.

Cooper cries.

They sing the last lines of the song while closer, looking at each other, and bathed in a blue light.

Then they stop singing, and have to admit this is real.

SO LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS, SHALL WE?
