video game stuff

So I'm playing Fallout 3 on the Xbox 360 right now and just need to take a moment here before bed to RAVE about it.

It's awesome.

It's got a cool RPG meets tactical shooter vibe that weirdly works really well. Wandering around post-nuclear war Washington D.C. is rad and spooky and keeps you on edge. The fights are as slow and tactical or as fast and frenzied as you want to make them. It lets you play it how you want.

My favorite part of it all though is it lets my gaming actions become motivated, logical character actions. For example, if I'm playing a game where I'm a chivalrous knight and I kill a rabid dog there's NO reason for a chivalrous knight to take the meat off the dog and keep it in his backpack. And yet as the gamer I know that I can sell the dog meat to someone for very little money so I might take it. However, in the post nuclear devastation of Fallout 3 everyone makes their living by scavenging EVERYTHING they can get their hands on. You kill a dog then you sure as hell take the meat and sell it or eat it your self. So my motivation as a gamer lines up with my motivation as the character. Maybe not important for some but it really enhances the game for me.

I also love how unforgiving the game is. You get into a big firefight and run out of bullets. Guess what? Now you have no bullets and you'll be fighting with a baseball bat until you can find someone to sell you ammo. You see an enemy that looks like to much to handle. RUN AWAY. It probably IS a fight you can't handle. So what if it's blocking you path to where you need to go. You'll have to take the long way.

So is summary, Fallout 3 is the shit. It's mean, ruthless, and totally rad.
