The first season of Family Ties, a favorite '80's classic of mine that I have always loved watching in local and cable syndicated reruns. This show was known for taking a twist on its characters not seen on many other shows: the parents Steven and Elyse Keaton were the liberals, and the oldest son, Alex, was the conservative. There's also their two daughters, Mallory and Jennifer.
I had initially held off on getting this set after hearing about music changes taking place. But after hearing that it happens in 3 episodes, leaving 19 untouched (2-3 episodes being modified is pretty much in my tolerance level for edits); as well as it being $12.39 when it was on sale at amazon, I decided to get it.
Though the best part about the whole music changing situation with this set in particular is that when you put in disc 1, a preview for classic TV on DVD plays... and one of the ways CBS/Paramount DVD tout their sets in the ad? "Nothing is missing." Then we see a cleverly edited clip of Schulz from Hogan's Heroes saying "Nothing!" right after that.
Um, yeah, CBS/Paramount, tell that to the scene with the Phil Ochs song that got cut out of the pilot episode. It's bad enough that a scene would be missing anyway, but that's just insult to injury... not to mention false advertising.
Other than that, this is a pretty good set. I've scanned through the discs to make sure none of them are faulty. Can't wait to watch the episodes in full! The show got off to a pretty good start, I think. Though I'm sure if someone were more familiar with the later seasons, it'd be interesting to see it before Andrew Keaton was born and before Michael Gross grew his beard out.
Here's what the inside looks like... pretty much your typical movie-style case. I know these save space, and that's a good thing. But I like the case sets that are slightly larger and have a bit more artwork.
^ You can see the episode guide listings on the inside covers.
^ And here it is on my shelf!
I'm planning on getting the other seasons at some point. So far they've gotten up to season 5. Only two left after that; I hope they're put out some day.
