The master bedroom is being painted! This does not seem like a big deal for most people, but it is rather tricky when you have a toddler demanding attention all the time. And while I know some people give their kids a brush and point them at an empty wall, we did not really want to take that route. I *like* his clothes. Thankfully, we have Grammy nearby, and she babysat both yesterday and today which allowed us to get stuff done.
The walls are going to be "Spring Hill" (Behr), which is basically sage green. We bought a sage green cellular blackout shade for our windows years ago, so we made sure the color we picked didn't clash with that. We chose "Lightweight Beige" (no kidding - that's what it's called) for the ceiling and as an accent on the fireplace surround.
Yes, we have a fireplace in our bedroom.
It's totally over the top and unnecessary, but all the houses built at this time in this neighborhood have one. It's a gas fireplace, and the mantle/surround are just built out wallboard covered in textured plaster like the rest of the room, but it is a "feature". We got to choose tile which immediately surrounds the hot part of the fireplace, and the tile we chose is a mottled hunter green (which matches the master bath). That obviously doesn't match the sage green, but it doesn't clash as much as you might think it would. So we are painting the mantle and surround "lightweight beige" and that way there is a bit of a buffer between the two greens.
This morning we masked the room, covering the baseboard, laying out plastic over all the floor, covering the doors and windows etc. Around 6:00 PM we actually got to painting, and now the ceiling is done, and the tricky parts of the fireplace. (I have to be very careful not to get paint in the tile grout, or the paint will wick in under the masking tape and I'll never be able to remove it from the grout.) I have to finish some more sides of the fireplace after I eat a bit of dinner, and we'll have to do a whole second coat over the whole thing tomorrow. Then we wait for that to dry, do the tricky thing with the masking tape and the two colors of paint, and then finally paint the walls. That will happen in the evenings later this week.
(The tricky thing with the masking tape and the two colors of paint is to prevent the two colors from bleeding into each other even with the textured walls. It takes an extra step and therefore an extra day, but it results in absolutely perfect straight lines between two colors of paint on a textured surface, eliminating bleed-under. We didn't do it in our dining room, and you can really tell.)
Anyway, the project is underway. Someone else could have gotten more done faster, but this is actually incredibly fast for John and I. I can't say that I helped by taking a nap today when Griffin napped, but for Preggers Lady, a nap means a happier Mommy and therefore a happier family later in the day.
In other news, we're really looking forward to our new bed. I think it's just the contrast - now that we've test driven some really comfortable beds, our regular bed is feeling very uncomfortable these days. It was perfectly fine a couple weeks ago, but now it's just barely cutting it as a temporary solution until our new bed arrives. And it's not just me either, John was complaining about the bed this morning. Oh well, we'll suffer through on our totally normal queen size bed until next week sometime. And then.... new mattress Nirvana!
