Character name: Gon Freecs
Fandom: Hunter x Hunter
Timeline: From the series: in the middle of the latest arc, right before the attack on the Chimera ant king's castle. From Mostly Harmless: He's arriving back on the Thor after five months of SPACE ADVENTURES!
Age: 13
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Gon has much better-than-average senses of smell, sight, and hearing. He's also very strong for his size and age. He's a competent user of Nen, his universe's version of chakra or chi. His special technique Jajanken is a three-part attack modeled after the game janken. Using 'rock' he focuses his nen into his fist, increasing the power of his punches by ridiculous proportions. At the very least he can easily knock holes in concrete walls. "Paper" creates a wide swath of force, which, while much weaker than rock because it's so spread out, is useful in its own way. If Gon is unable to hit an opponent with precision, for example, he can still knock them away by using paper. Lastly, by using "scissor", he focuses his nen into a long, narrow blade which he can then use to cut...well, pretty much anything.
Using Nen he is also able to withstand physical attacks that would crush, maim, or kill a normal human being.
How would they use their abilities?: For sparring, or doing missions, or helping people. He's not the type of kid to needlessly pick fights, though he does enjoy a good one when it comes up.
Appearance: Gon is a short, skinny kid with green-black hair and big brown eyes. His dark tan is a testament to many, many hours spent outdoors. He normally wears a pair of green shorts with a navy-blue tank-top, a matching green-and-red jacket, and a pair of comfortable knee-high hiking boots. Over the past year both in and out of the RP, he's grown a few inches, so he's now probably now about 5'4" or 5'5". Other than that, his overall appearance - that of a bright-eyed, innocent little kid - really hasn't changed all that much.
Background/Personality: An open, honest person, Gon is someone animals instinctively trust. He has an extremely optimistic, trusting nature, almost to the point of naiveté. Though the first 12 years of his life were spent in a quiet village on an isolated island and he doesn't have a lot of life experience, he is a fast learner, at least insofar as how things like technology and society work, though that second one is still debatable. Even considering everything he's seen and experienced since he left home, it's not in his nature to be suspicious of other people, which is a key aspect of his personality. He tends to react to people and situations instinctively rather than intelligently, and is over-inclined to trust everyone he meets, regardless of circumstance, until they give him a reason not to. It can be argued that he's quite stupid in this regard, though his animal-like instincts are reliable enough that his utter lack of guile isn't as much of a handicap as it might initially appear. He is very slow to anger. The only thing that really makes him angry is when people hurt his friends, and when he does lose his temper, it's quite a sight to behold.
Gon was raised from infancy by his Aunt Mito. Growing up he was always curious about his father, Ging, but his aunt refused to tell him anything about the man, and lead him to believe he was dead. He was finally able to learn more when he met a man named Kite, who happened know his father. From Kite, Gon learned that not only was Ging alive, but that he was a legendary hunter. Determined to find his father, Gon confronted his Aunt Mito with his knowledge and convinced her to let him leave home to take the Hunter Exam so that he could begin searching for Ging.
During the Hunter Exam, Gon met and befriended three of the other participants; Killua Zaoldyeck, Kurapika, and Leorio, all of whom ended up working with him during the different trials contained within the exam. With his own enthusiasm and easy friendship, he inspired the other three to the same, earning himself three friends for life. Never having had a friend his own age before, Gon became especially close to Killua, who was pretty much polar opposite of him in every respect. Where Gon was cheerful and open, Killua was introverted and crafty. This aspect of Killua's personality didn't faze Gon at all, however. When he asked Killua what his parents did for a living and Killua responded "mass murder," Gon believed him without hesitation, immediately following up with the question, "both of them?" He's pretty much immune to sarcasm, and has a tendency to take everything that is said to him seriously.
Though the four weren't without their disagreements, they worked well together all the way to the final trial. After the exam, which everyone but Killua passed, Killua was forced to return to his home by his older brother, who had followed him after he'd run away from home and entered the Hunter Exam without Killua's knowledge. With Kurapika and Leorio's help, Gon traveled to Killua's home - an imposing fortress high in the mountains - to retrieve his friend. He stubbornly refused to be turned away by the Zaoldyeck family's employees, even in the face of repeated threats of bodily harm (and quite a lot of actual physical harm), and in the end was able to reunite with his friend. Gon is not afraid of getting hurt to get what he wants. It's pretty equal parts stubbornness and plain determination.
Having successfully helped Gon retrieve Killua from his family, Leorio and Kurapika split off from the two kids and went their separate ways - Leorio to attend medical school, and Kurapika to begin his own personal, private training. Gon and Killua made their way to a fighting arena known as the Celestial Tower, a 251 floor building where the best of the best gathered to battle for supremacy. There they met a man named Wing, who taught them about Nen, a mystical aura produced by the body which can be tapped into to greatly increase one's natural abilities, or which can be manipulated to create new ones.
Once they felt they had learned all they could at the Celestial Tower, Gon took Killua back to Whale Island to introduce him to his Aunt Mito. Mito, having come to terms with Gon's pursuit of Ging, gave him a box left to him by his father. Contained within the box were a cassette tape, an odd ring, and a Joystation memory card with save data for a game called Greed Island. Excited by this discovery and certain it would lead him to his father, Gon attempted to locate a copy of the game to find out what was on the save file. With Killua's help, he learned that finding a copy was not only going to be difficult, it would be nearly impossible, as there were only 100 copies in existence, and the asking price for one cartridge was nearly ten billion. The game was unlike any other ever made - once a person has begun to play, they are somehow physically pulled into the game, and cannot leave again until certain conditions are met within the game. To say that the game was the topic of many wild rumors was an understatement. Curiosity piqued, Gon was determined to find a copy.
The two boys spent a month with Mito, then took off again to Yorkshin City, where they had learned that a copy of Greed Island was up for auction, and set about raising enough money to enter the bidding for one of the seven copies available. Long story short, they came close but were unsuccessful. Fortunately, the winning bidder and new owner of the coveted software was looking for strong, intelligent people to play - his goal was victory, as there was no record of the game ever being won. Gon and Killua entered and passed the tryouts, and were finally able to begin playing.
Once he entered the game, Gon was immediately given a message by the game 'receptionist' from his father - one of the creators of the game! He would find no clues here as to where Ging might be found, and the message specifically informed him that playing the game would not assist him in locating his father; Ging had left behind the memory disk simply because he'd wanted to show the game to Gon. Disappointed but not discouraged, Gon went ahead and began playing anyway, figuring at the very least he could enjoy the game his dad made. Once in the game proper, the boys began working out how to play without getting killed - something that at first seemed easier said than done. Greed Island was a real-time strategy/card collecting game. To win, a player needed to collect all 100 cards. Considering Greed Island was a game made by hunters for hunters, this was a lot more difficult than it might sound, especially since a lot of the other players were not above killing off the competition if given the opportunity.
Gon was up to the challenge, though - it took quite a few near life-or-death fights and even more cooperation from many of the game's other players, but he managed to win. After placing the 100th card in his collector's book, he triggered the end-game sequence, which was a quiz about the cards that any player could participate in. Gon showcased his excellent memory and got a perfect score, and was taken to the game designers' headquarters. There he was congratulated on his accomplishment and given the ultimate prize - a card case with which he can take three of the game cards off of the island and back into the real world.
Using one of the cards he brought with him, Gon was able to teleport himself and Killua to the location of a game player who'd once played Greed Island under the name 'Ngig'. His excitement at figuring this out was quickly matched by his disappointment when the player who'd used that alias did not turn out to be his father. True to character, though, he recovered quickly from his disappointment because the man they had found was Ging's friend Kite, who had started his search for his father in the first place. Gon and Killua stayed with Kite and the group of scientists he was currently assisting, and helped them find and catalogue previously undiscovered insect and animal life.
When reports of an odd disturbance in a nation called NGL began being made, Gon and Killua went with Kite to investigate. What they found was that a chimera ant, a creature that consumes other creatures and uses their genetic material to produce its offspring, had developed a taste for humans, and had spawned quite a large army by consuming quite a few of the NGL's citizens. Many of the ant's offspring were powerful Nen users, so much so that Kite, both stronger and more experienced than Gon and Killua, was killed by one of the queen's soldiers. Devastated by the death of his friend and angry at his own weakness, Gon resolved to become stronger. He and Killua both trained long and hard over the course of the next month towards this purpose, and were preparing to launch an attack on the Chimera Ant King's castle with a group of other highly-experienced hunters when the world was somehow sucked into a black hole.
Through a lucky happenstance, Gon and Killua didn't die, but were rescued at the very last second by the S.S. Thor! Gon, being the naturally cheerful kid that he was, didn't let his planet's apparent annihilation get him down. He would just have to figure out a way to get it back, was all! In the mean time, he started signing up for missions and making new friends. On the work front, he did a little bit of everything, signing up for the most exciting-sounding missions. His favorite ones are the ones he did with friends - like the time he and Badou teamed up as a street performing duo - Gon as Wild Boy and Badou as his manager. A few months after that, Gon and his friend Shinjiro worked the same mission as lost tourist hunters. They started a competition between them at the beginning of the month to see who could rescue more lost tourists, but Gon won by default in the end because Shinjiro was a loser and had to go to the hospital halfway through the month.
When not working, Gon liked to keep busy - fishing on his own or with friends and sparring with Killua were two of his favorite activities. He often caught more fish than he could eat, and always happily gave away the extras to anyone who asked, until Killua made him stop because he thought Gon ought to charge money for them.
Back in May, he and Killua decided to take off on their own grand space adventure - the Thor was fun, but it was kind of cramping their style. Gon, at least, figured he'd be back one day, because of all the friends he'd left behind...
Have you read up on how the game works?: B|
Killua had to show Gon how to use the Flaming Ferret browser, but once he figured it out, he was able to sign up for missions. He never intentionally mooched off of anyone, but Ran Fan insisted on keeping him well-supplied with food even though he was perfectly capable of getting it himself. Once he did some street-performing to earn cash, which is kind of like begging, only more fun to watch. He's pretty rich from his space adventures, though, so he won't need the refugee stipend again.
1st person sample: Man, it feels I've been gone forever! It's really good to be back here again...even if I didn't realize they weren't gonna let us back into our apartment. I thought we'd filled out all the right forms to keep it, but maybe not.
...Oh well! It'll be fun to have new roommates for a little while!
Are you still here, Ran Fan? Polly? Badou? Ling and Greed? Yuri? Wolfram? Feliciano?
...
...Shinjiro?

3rd person sample: He had to focus, to be serious - this was no kid's game. Not anymore. This was the real deal, a challenge to his skills, his pride, his honor... No way could he let Killua beat him - not this time!
Drawing in a deep breath, Gon closed his eyes and exhaled slowly, centering himself, focusing all his energy towards his task. He blanked his mind, pushing away all other thoughts, keeping only his goal clearly in mind. Victory was the only acceptable outcome. Defeat...meant more humiliation than he could possibly imagine; surely a fate worse than death.
Taking another breath and opening his eyes, he stared intently at his opponent, meeting his friend's dark eyes with an open look of determination.
"Ready?" Killua asked. Gon nodded once, bringing up the chosen weapon for this particular battle of skill. Killua mirrored his actions exactly. Pulling the slim wand from its case, Gon held it up before his face, taking another deep breath, and blew - gently, gently.
The soap bubble formed reluctantly at first, wavering and shimmering in the plastic circle from which it was being born. With a constant gentle exhalation, the bubble steadied and formed itself, growing bigger and bigger until...
-POP!-
"Hah! I win!" Killua crowed.
"Argh!" Gon stomped his foot in frustration. "One more time!" he demanded.
