Lately I have been painfully aware of well-meaning Christians who genuinely believe that we still live in a Christian nation, and/or that we were founded by Christians or under Christian principles. This breaks my heart, for I wish it were true... but it is not. Let me give you an ( Read more... )

Yes indeed. I am glad that some of the factual errors of the extreme sides of politics are coming into the focus and spotlight of mainstream culture. I think that the idea that this nation was founded by Christians has been a poison in our psyche for a while, and to see some of the truth outed is a good thing. Deism is a far removal from Christianity, and it rejects many of the fundamental ideas of Christianity -- it not only asserts that Jesus was neither the son of God nor divine, but it rejects the idea of sin and salvation. Jefferson talked about this many times, and though his quotes are some of the more searing of our founding fathers, they are by no means alone. The fundamentals of the USA are rooted in the idea that to be religiously neutral in government is to be the benefit of everyone ( ... )

I meant to imply that it was a taint insofar as it resulted in the rejection of anything that sounded supernatural without applying those very same rational methods it brought us ( ... )
