sarajayechan requested my thoughts on Utena/Anthy so here I go.
Let me preface this by saying a truly quality essay on Utena/Anthy would have to be by someone who truly understands the anime. I SO don't. But I understand some things, and I still like it a lot, so. This focuses on the anime, much as I love and adore the movie. (Seriously. We've registered at various stores. Our love is true!)
I think the sapphic love is totally right for Utena. Who else would she be with? Miki is jailbait and as much as I love Touga's hilarious devotion to Utena in the manga after she kicks his ass, he probably has gonorrhea or something. Some it's the wimmens for her.
That said, I think Anthy is kind of a bitch. Not to a huge extent, but while she's hardly the manipulator Akio was, she had her own share of fucking with people (literally and figuratively), plus she did that whole STABBING UTENA IN THE BACK thing. Bitch!
But I still like Anthy and Utena. They're good for each other because they tend to pull each other back from their default extremes; Utena gives Anthy hope that she doesn't have to be a supernatural fucktoy forever, and Anthy keeps Utena from being so fucking idealistic. Ideals are all well and good, but you need to acknowledge that SHIT HAPPENS.
The series is so symbolic that it's hard to imagine their daily life together--fic about the two of them living as a couple in the real world just seems weird--but I think they're right for each other, at least for a long while.
Plus their hair matches. That really is the defining characteristic of compatibility.
