This and That
Today's the first day of finals. Today ROCKED. No, not because of the finals--I didn't have any today, other than running to East Hall to deliver a technical writing group project. That actually did turn out to be a pain in the ass because of the no-show group member (family emergency, which is understandable, but she could have tried harder to get ahold of us and let us know, but she didn't, so I was still peeved) and surprisingly-bad-writer group member (COMPLETE. SENTENCES. PLZ. KTHXBAI.) so Cool Group Member and I had to get everything together. There are some things I would've liked to have fixed, but overall I'm getting an A, we know she'll lean positively for us, and overall it's still not a bad paper so whatev. DONE.
Today ruled because Becky and I got the first volume of Suikoden III manga. Geddoe! Queen! Chris! Oh yeah, Hugo too. I don't dislike him, but as dialogue says, he really is just the hero of most RPGs. The young brave teen with leadership qualities etc etc. But hooray! Manga!
I also got these from Claire's. Geek, thy name is Jaina. I don't even cosplay as Utena, and yet I squee. Today I am a black rose duelist because it matches my outfit. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?
I've always said that I'll read just about any type of fic if it's really good. Today I'll stand by my words. rainjewel has been posting some really excellent ficlets/drabbles to trigun_fics...and they're WolfwoodxVash. She doesn't make me believe in the pairing, really. After reading her fics, if I stop to think about them as a couple, my mind still goes "Nope, don't think so." But while I'm reading, I'm happy to suspend the disbelief because her writing is lovely and she's got some nice characterization. AND SHE DOESN'T MAKE MERYL A BITCH. So happy does this make me.
Incidentally, am I the only one who thinks a community devoted to pairings in a fandom seems odd? It's the name of the community that feels wrong to me, I think. I mean, trigun_relationships, yes--let's talk about the different relationships between characters! Nuances upon nuances! MidvalleyxMeryl 4-evah! Or alt_pairings, for people to come defy conventions. But just...pairings? With no more driving force to it? To me that just seems like a community about...say, food. The difference between a pairing community and the examples I gave above seems like the difference between a food community in which people mill about and are all "Yep! I like food! It's a good thing!" and communities where recipe trades are actively promoted, people are encouraged to share restaurant stories...I'm weird, I know. Maybe this is why I have such trouble with titles.
Cool news from Friday. My mom's friend/co-teacher's daughter is getting married in October, and they want to pay me to take candids at the wedding. I can do that. My reaction to this comes in three stages:
1) MONEY!
2) RESUME PADDING!
3) EXCUSE TO GET A DIGITAL CAMERA! (You see, I lack a flash on my manual 35 mm)
So, cool. This news came to me via cell phone at Japanese Club's (of which I am nominally a member) Ohanami (cherry-blossom festival) which was big fun despite being moved indoor due to the week's only rain. Rice balls and sesame seeds = yum. And I won a balloon yo-yo. I HAVE DA MAD SKILLZ, YO. And there were cute Japanese kids, which means Eric probably spent half of the time giggling like a schoolgirl. The other half he spent getting his ass kicked in arm-wrestling. (Arm sumo. Snicker.) The less fun part came when I turned around and saw Crazy Girl there. I'm sure my face was pretty funny to see at that exact moment. It's not like I'm a 6th grader who can't be in the same room with her "enemies" (another term I've always found stupid--hostile countries have enemies, not school kids), but I admit to being a bit twitchy. At least next semester, the campus will be cleansed of evil. Of course...I'll still be here next semester, which is not so good. Sigh. I'd really like my degrees and an actual job and to be fadingembers' roommate. I guess I should stop bitching--if I hadn't found VCT, I'd be done already and with fewer marketable skills than I have now. So yay VCT. *makes perverted flash movies*
Hmm, I should watch my tape of Angel tonight. Don't want to be behind on things when the fabulous, uber-happymaking series finale rolls around. [/sarcasm]
