don't forget to remember...

...these bits and pieces:

I'm speaking in poems today.
The poems are running off me in rivulets, plump drops,
sunny water sprayed at a car wash.
The broom leans against the misty morning window - something in that?
The cat shifts on my lap, no care for my coffee, and I realize
not for the first time
that I love my dog more.
My cat, well, I love it because it is mine.
Nothing else.
Is this horrible?
You may not think so if you knew my cat.
Could I have a child and feel this way?
A pity its personality is lacking, it's always hungry,
but it's mine.
Surely I could love even the worst child more.
Something tells me I can.

Can a word be resonsible or just
its utterer?
Are there animals in the word nigger?
Savages that bite and cling: monkey spiders
hating each action that, for you
is only a simple history,
a sequence of events
in which you are simply swept along.

poetry, poems
