It is his episode, though it seems as though the scenes involving the bear pit may not have been his. Per his LJ, he said that the title was only changed to its current iteration after "some scenes were shuffled around". Still, I'm optimistic!
Yeah, I don't want Benioff & Weiss writing the bear pit scene (if so, potential goodbye any nuance to be had!), although if they only named it that AFTER the scenes were shuffled around, it sounds like they might have. ;__; I can't remember which eps Cogman & Taylor wrote, but they only wrote two again this season, IIRC.
Benioff & Weiss wrote eps 8, 9 and 10 per wikipedia, so I am a bit put out. On the *other* hand, and perhaps this is overly optimistic, if merely rearranging a few scenes put Bear Pit in GRRM's episode, maybe GRRM wrote most of the lead-up to it, at least?
Benioff & Weiss seem to be cherrypicking all the "awesome" scenes and I wish it would stop, b/c their writing is my least favorite and there's SO much of it on this series.
And I really wish GRRM had a bit more control over Benioff & Weiss and what they do, b/c yeesh. Their version of Jaime & Brienne is sort of the cold-blooded killers duo, which is ok, but it's sort of lazy. I don't see this version of Jaime being wooby at all really in his dialogue, though Nikolaj is at least trying to sell it a bit with his facial expressions. They may not be able to cut "I dreamed of you," so maybe it won't suck.
I want to say I'm cautiously optimistic, but I dunno. Since Brienne's my favorite character, I don't know if I can still do the AU!Brienne this season. We'll see. (I've been telling myself she's older than her book counterpart and that's why she can kill everyone without batting an eye....)
ugh yeah, benioff and weiss are easily the weakest writers imo, and I hate how cold they've made brienne. they seem to forget that none of these characters are supposed to be playing their tropes straight...
Sometimes I think Benioff & Weiss just sped-read this series, or only read the chapters for certain characters. I don't think they really get it, tbh.
I'd really prefer if they just punched up some of the other writers' work and didn't hog all of the scripts.
And boo to cold Brienne. But maybe she won't need Jaime to save her at all in the show. Perhaps she'll wrestle Bart II to the ground and rip out his throat all on her own. XD
I went back and read some of the later comments on the post announcing the episode names on ONTD, and someone pointed out that "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" was sung during a Sansa/Olenna scene in the book, so maybe Benioff & Weiss didn't do the bear pit scene after all. HAPPY DAY if it is true!
I don't think there was any doubt that there *wouldn't* be a bear pit scene after they cast Bart II for it, but we'll see if Benioff & Weiss play around with it, or just let GRRM do his thing.
Gwen did look awesome in that scene! She kinda looked like she was growling, herself, LOL.
