CASE STRUCTURE FOR VALUE/METAPHOR
Introduction
I. Attention-gaining device- On their way to a justice of the peace to get married, a couple has a fatal car accident. The couple is sitting outside Heaven's gate waiting on St. Peter to do an intake. While waiting, they wonder if they could possibly get married in Heaven. St. Peter finally shows up and they ask him. St. Peter says, "I don't know, this is the first time anyone has asked. Let me go find out," and he leaves.
The couple sits for a couple of months and begin to wonder if they really should get married in Heaven, what with the eternal aspect of it all, "What if it doesn't work?" they wonder, "Are we stuck together forever?"
St. Peter returns after yet another month, looking somewhat bedraggled. "Yes," he informs the couple, "you can get married in Heaven."
"Great," says the couple, "but what if things don't work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?"
St. Peter becomes red-faced and slams his clipboard onto the ground.
"What's wrong?" exclaims the frightened couple.
"COME ON!" St. Peter shouts, "It took me three months to find a priest up here! Do you have any idea how long it's going to take for me to find a lawyer!?"
3. Significance or adaptation- Lawyers are ruining society through their services and practices
4. Resolution- The only good lawyer is a dead lawyer
5. Preview of observations
observation 1- definitions (for each term):
Lawyer- one whose profession is to give legal advice and assistance to clients and represent them in court or in other legal matters.
Good- worth while, worth living
Dead- Not working
"The only good lawyer is a dead lawyer"
observation 2 - value hierarchy
identification of inherent value- All of us need lawyers at some point, whether it is for medical reasons, tax evasion or divorce. Some of us may even become or marry a lawyer. They all have their own values. Values such as greed, triumph, dishonesty, ethics and narcissism.
Greed- For the Love of money. All lawyers strive for it. They want the money, that is why they take their cut out of settlements, also while charging and arm and a leg by an hour for consultation, and even then, not using the entire hour, yet chrging you for it.
Triumph- In order to receive their fee, they must win the case. And in order to get better and more publicized and valuable money and acknowlegements, they must win cases. They need the acceptance of other evil doers, their coworkers, other lawyers, in order to get it.
Dishonesty- This is the first thing you think about when you think of lawyers, Let's face it, all of their clients are not innocent little children. They have to defend child molesters, drug dealers and tax fraud convicts. And they know they are guilty, but they still must protest their innocence through lying.
Ethics- We all have our different codes of ethics and so does each lawyer. They will lie and cheat to find the information that they need to help their client and screw the opposing side. This is what they are paid for, and that is what they will do every time. It will never change.
Narcissism- They all want to be the best in their field, at least the best in their firm. We have all seen the movies, where that is goal, to become a partner in their company, to become ruthless and the best.
criteria for value (for each):
a. identify criterion (a standard of judging)- Greed, Triumph, Dishonesty, Ethics, Narcissim
b. exemplify criterion
Above all, lawyers put Greed before everything else. They want the money. Then follows, triumph, dishonesty, narcissim and dishonesty
restatement of value hierarchy- identification of inherent value- All of us need lawyers at some point, whether it is for medical reasons, tax evasion or divorce. Some of us may even become or marry a lawyer. They all have their own values. Values such as greed, triumph, dishonesty, ethics and narcissism.
observation 3 - proof of hierarchy (for each example):
Greed:
-Lawyers in most divorce or medical cases will take at least 10% of whatever his client gains from the case plus his expenses
-Greed consumes lawyers even more so than other occupations because their only goal is to win, otherwise they have much less to gain
Proof
Dishonesty:
-83% of lawyers clients are not innocent. And by that i mean in some form the lawyer is stretching or leaving out some part of the truth.
-Whether their client is right or wrong, the lawyers only job is to represent them the best way that they can. And force the case to sway their in their favor.
Proof
Lack of ethics:
-This runs along with dishonesty, yet is slightly different because ethics is the way a lawyer lives and beleives in his life and career.
-This is why they are better off dead. These lawyers work and believe in deciet and bleieve it is alright to protect the wrong.
Proof
Narcissism:
- Lawyers want to be the best, granted we all do, but the live up to their sleazy stereotypes most the time.
-They dress up in the silk suits, sleek their hair back, and they think they are c harming. Well they are like the snake that told Eve to eat the apple. They charm the jury with lies, and for that, they do not deserve a good life.
Proof
Need to triumph:
- Winning a case for a lawyer means money and better recognition with a winning reputation.
-If lawyers do not triumph in their case, they not only lose money but also future clients. They need the bragging rights.
