I grew up in a small town. One of those standard everyone-knows-everbody types, where even if you don't really know someone, you know someone connected to them. The last month or so has been crazy over there.
A few weeks back, there was a murder in one of the townships within the school district. Well, more than a murder...three people shot, one beaten to death, in a house that was then set on fire. The community is aghast, as I think any would be. In the 28 years or so that I've had an association with the town, I don't know as if there ever was a murder. If there was, it was most likely a DV situation.
The people killed were a woman, two of her sons (late teens), and one of the sons' girlfriends, who had stayed over on a weekend home from MSU. It's one of those families that has a million branches in the town, so I probably know any number of people related to them. I graduated a year behind an older brother of the sons; we ran with different crowds. As of today, there's been no arrest in the case.
Yesterday, a man from Newaygo was arrested in connection with a beating/CSC attack in GR and an attempted murder. I hadn't really paid attention, until the police announced that he had lived next door to the family that was killed. I re-read the article, and realized that I actually knew the guy. One of those things where you see the picture of someone you haven't seen in probably 15-20 years, and it dawns on you that he's more than familiar looking. He went to my school, was in my grade for a while.
The police are insinuating that he was the perpetrator, but who knows. I'm not really being affected by everything, since I'm so far removed...just one of those chill-down-the-spine things.
Add to that there's a murder trial going on in GR where the husband killed the wife. The husband had been previously married to one of my classmates, and the wife had had a child with a boy (man) that my mom had babysat while I was growing up. You expect stuff like that in the D, but not out in cowtown.
