So I am officially an University of Michigan Graduate!  Its a pretty surreal feeling.  After going to school for 18 years, to be done is strange.  I still have no idea where I'll be working, but I don't care.  I'm finally finished!  People keep telling me to go to grad school because I have such an amazing talent.  Honestly, I need a break from ( Read more... )

"People keep telling me to go to grad school because I have such an amazing talent. Honestly, I need a break from singing and school. School is the one thing that made me hate what I'm most passionate about, singing."

One of my friends and I were talking about this last night. She's going to grad school (or auditioning, at least), I'm not, but she doesn't want to anymore. We think these days, that the performance majors are kind of like trade school for music. There are so many music class requirements, that they don't give you any time to take classes related to other things. So by the time you're 22 or 23 and ready to graduate, you have no idea if you still want to do what you wanted when you were 18, or if you need to move on. Also, our faculty basically sucks, so for us, it's like they're saying, "Hey, we don't care about you anymore because we love this new freshman, but YOU still have to care and get into grad school." Not good.

Anyway, I just wanted to say good for you for not doing what everyone says and going to grad school. Feels good, doesn't it?

Lol, yeah I totally understand that feeling. I hate school anyway so I don't see why I should waste money on grad school right now. I'll still be a good singer regardless. Maybe an even better one if I can devote my time to only practicing voice rather than the 800 other things they want you to do.
