(no subject)

I figured that I deserved a day off of job search stuff because right now it's basically a waiting game anyway (no pun intended). So, I went to Park (parkies). It was fun. I spent most of the day with Kim and talked to a lot of people. The best part was that a few people suggested that I get on the sub rolls for the Lower and Middle schools, so I think I will do that. Substitute teaching. Fun. The even better part is that the nurse wants to hire me to do some tutoring for her son in math. Nice! I knew it would pay to make the rounds of the school. I also talked to Mme. Broening, my french teacher (and realized that my French conversation skills have gone way downhill; I seriously could not say anything properly), Mr. Acheson, my advisor and MUN faculty person, Mr. Coll, english teacher and Writing Center director (though I didn't get a chance to talk to him about Haverford tutoring), and Tabs and Mr. Howell, math teachers. Also talked to a science teacher that I never had, but who married a Haverford alum who wrote me a rec. Coolness. However, the not so cool part was that I saw some homophobia, and I (via a really bad yearbook photograph of myself) was sort of involved in it, and that made me feel upset for many reasons. If it had been my senior year photograph, it wouldn't have been so bad, but at least it wasn't my 9th grade photo. Yipes. But whatever. One of my friends, Scott, got in early to Haverford (haverford), but some others got deferred. Coolness for him, not so coolness for the rest. However, the Park/Haverford tradition will continue! Plus, the college guidance counselor came and said some really nice things to me about how he chewed out one of the Haverford Admissions people for deferring me after I went on to become a campus leader. Sweet.

The current scandal: the entire senior class lost their Sr. privileges because some of them were leaving campus to smoke pot during lunch. Yipes! Nothing like that ever happened when I was at Park.

Grades still haven't come. Grrr... However, I got an e-mail from my CS prof about a possible summer job opportunity. Sweet! It looks really great for me. Here's the description:

Beginning a preliminary investigation into tools for the exposition and development of algorithms in introductory computer science. There are a large number of tools to help professional programmers develop software, and some computer languages (e.g. "Pascal") have been developed for teaching. However, there don't seem to be many systems to either

(a) Assist in the exposition of an algorithm that is well understood by one person and must be communicated to others, or

(b) Assist new students in learning to visualize the execution of algorithms.

I'm interested in looking for work in these two areas, and comparing what we find to some preliminary ideas of my own; if my ideas seem worthwhile, we may want to implement and distribute something.

This work does not require any background beyond CS205...

I also plan to do this work... in conjunction with the "Cascade Mentoring Outreach Program" in which students and teachers from Philadelphia high schools come to Haverford.

Cool. So, that's my life so far today. We'll see what comes later.

I leave you with the immortal words of Guster:

If you want to be free, take a sip of this tea. Join the Red Oyster Cult. If you drink the whole cup, you will never grow up, you will never grow old.
