A couple of years ago I got the idea in my head that we should go to Paris and visit Versaille, this was the day it came to be.
Friday December 12th 2008
Versaille is a truly enormous and beautiful estate. It was winter so many of the statues were covered up and trees had lost their leaves, the gardens were bare. We walked up to the golden gates still expecting to enjoy our time there.
we explored the Inside of the palace, grand halls lined with statues, some rooms were decorated so highly there wasn't a spot free. There was an odd art exhibition in the palace by Jeff Koons, he does fairly modern, crass pieces of work such as a giant ballooon poodle. His works were placed one per room. The audio guide suggested his works were to contrast the modern with the times gone by
I guess my favourite section of the palace was the huge hall with mirrors, plenty of golden goodies along the walls too.
I do wonder about living in such a place, it's hard to imagine with all the preserving and barriers all around
Out the back of the palace we wandered around the huge gardens, down so many steps and paths, past fountains that looked very miserable in this weather.
We had a gorgeous lunch at La Flottille, which is located in the gardens of Versaille, I had tartiflette with a glass of white and Jan had a nice steak.
After lunch we wandered around a little more then made our way to the pink marble Marie Antoinettes palace
I really liked the yellow fabric furniture and green glass in this more modern abode.
We finished off our stay by taking the long walk back to the front through more gardens, frozen fountains etc. it really felt like we were alone there sometimes, we could have just put up a tent.
