I've always had trouble dealing with the duality of my life. It's hard to flip between musician and family type guy. Take yesterday for example:
I woke up at 2:45 a.m. and left for fourchon. got to my office at 3:30 and worked till 8:45.
Left fourchon at 8:45 and drove to Larose to meet Reuben Williams. Loaded my portable recording equipment into his suburban and we left for New Orleans.
Arrived at an Indian Museum (I forget the name) in New Orleans and proceed to set up my recording equipment in an old room in the back of the building. The goal was to record some indian chants as segues & background stuff for this multi-tribe traditional indian record I'm helping Reuben put together. By 1 p.m. we had what we needed and was on our way to our next stop.
Got to Piety Street Recording Studios at around 1:30 p.m. This studio is where Ryan Adams and Dr. John recorded their last albums. The place is really beautiful and has some great equipment. We were there to make sure Tab Benoit's recording session for his next album was going okay (Reuben is Tab's manager). I walk into a room and sitting there is Tab, Carl Dufrene, Daryl White, Cyril Neville, Ivan Neville, Art Neville and David Z. For those of you who don't know David Z, he co-produced all of Prince's albums from his demo tape till Diamonds and Pearls (including Purple Rain). He also produced Jonny Lang, Big Head Todd & The Monsters and a bunch of other artists I'm forgetting. It was hard for me to keep my shit together as the conversation gradually turned to Prince. We suggested some grooves for Tab and the boys to work on and got out of their way around 4 p.m.
Got home at 5 p.m. and went out into the backyard to play with my daughter Cameron.
Ate supper at 7 and was asleep by 10.
See what I mean?
