Character: Hal Emmerich
Fandom: Metal Gear Solid
Timeline: He's sixteen seventeen eigthteen (wow!) years old here, before Huey's "accident" at the pool, but after Julie seduced him. Their affair had been slowly progressing for a couple of months before he got into the Nexus.
Since I'm playing him from way before that throwaway line retconned his age in Peace Walker, Hal remains born in 1974.

Hal Emmerich at sixteen was a very lonely boy.
He did good at school, either by talent (Maths) or a lot of hard work (English). It wasn't like he had anything else to occupy his time with. Socially awkward as he was, he didn't have any friends to hang out with. He was terribly shy and his status as a nerd didn't help matters. The school environment was a hostile one.
In 1991, his father Huey Emmerich married a divorced woman with a child, Julie Danziger. The little girl, Emma, quickly won Hal's heart; and he started spending a lot of his time with her, regarding her as a beloved baby sister.
1992 was also the beginnings of the Internet for public users. Hal had dabbled on it before -his father had a home connection since the late eighties, due to his work as a "professor"- but the new accessibility quickly got him interested, finally giving him the impulse to start learning to program on his own. It was a whole new world for him.
Huey Emmerich was a true workaholic, and he spent a lot of time outside the house. He lived more at his job than at home, and so he left his son, Emma, and his new wife alone a lot.
Being Emma the only true human contact Hal had had at this point, it wasn't difficult for Julie to get close to him, first as a mother-figure, and then slowly seducing him. Hal was mildly aware of what was happening, but lonely as he was, and with his huge lack of self-esteem, it wasn't hard for Julie to coerce him into falling in love with her, and then into a relationship.
And then, the Nexus happened.
Inside the Nexus:
- He's got some spoilers of his future thanks to the loving efforts of, mainly, older Otacons. Specially justhalnow, whom he quite likes (and worries for) despite the awkwardness.
- Is still quite socially uncomfortable, but slowly getting better. It helps that most of the people he has met there has been friendly to him. Still stutters out of nervousness, less so when he is with people he trusts.
- Is harrased by His first friend in the Nexus was totallytanya. clonesoldier is his first male friend of his age. Also feels close to liquidouroboros, though he's not sure if the appreciation is mutual, and would like to know newsavegrl better.
- He has had one birthday inside the Nexus, and it seems he'll have a second one soon too.
- Was killed once by darksideofwar. As a result, he got some leftover trauma about his own weakness, and a resolution to protect his loved ones.
- ... Resolution which led him to agree when livingherdream asked him to design a giant robot. Oops. But he doesn't know his designs are going to be used for evil? And that he's basically helping to build a Metal Gear? And also that he may be developing a crush on that particular Big Boss?
- The Metal Gear incident resolved somewhat messily, since that particular Big Boss decided to start a war and use it. Hello, crippling guilt complex! But it could have been way worse, and at least Hal was able to help disabling his creation.
- Currently lives with be_safe_hal and mnotacomputer. Also invited clonesoldier to move in, waiting for him to do so. clonesoldier moved in with him and mnotacomputer! ~♥ But 2014!E.E. has disappeared.
