So, like I said, I've been subbing.
I was going to write about my first couple days here, when I was subbing for my mom, but I guess I didn't. In summary, it did not go very well. The older kids, third through fifth grade, were okay. The kindergartners, surprisingly, were okay. The first graders were completely insane. Screaming and kicking each other and just being awful. It was like I wasn't even in the room. Nothing I knew how to do made any difference, as my mom had just assumed that things would be awesome because I'm her kid and the novelty factor would just make it all go smoothly. If an aide hadn't been in the room to take over temporarily and just be like, "what do you think you're doing?", I don't know what I would have done.
Later that night my mom told me what she does when the kids get out of control (basically warning them once, and then making everyone sit in stony silence for three whole minutes if they still act up, with letters getting sent home to the parents if anyone talks), and the next day things were better. But she was pissed. As was the aide, who assured me that they had never been that bad before and that she didn't know what had gotten into them. Anyway, my mom said that vengeance would be mine, and that they were toast next time she saw them.
Today I came back from subbing at the high school (a lot better than Wednesday, by the way), and sitting on my bed was a purple file folder. Inside, twenty-some letters from the first graders, apologizing for their behavior. I had no idea that this was the punishment she was going to mete out; I figured she'd give them a stern talking to and make sure they lost some recess time. But then again, you don't fuck with my mom, and especially not my mom's sons.
Because I haven't actually read through them yet, I'm just going to type them up here as I go.
The form of the letter is, at the top:
