I've just finished reading this a few moments ago, and truly glad i did, after being tormented by it for so long.
Many times, throughout, i had wanted to just close up the book or just throw it against the wall. Not particularly because it bores me out but yes because i can't stand reading it. I am constantly angered by the characters and there is not one character that i am fond of.
No.1: Tess's father, or Sir John of the declined family of D'uberville
He's lazy. and quite an arrogant git as well as a big baby who refuses to grow up from the "nobility" of his birth that has apparently brought nothing but trouble to poor Tess. Aha, but i'm still not sympathising with Tess, not one bit. Has a big mouth too, and when he realises that he has just gone round boasting about something that is going to fall apart, has fallen apart, or will fall apart, he then goes around moaning that everything is unjust to him, the noble descendant of the great family that blah blah blah blah blah.
No.2: Tess
Seriously, for all your beauty and supposed wits, you've let yourself ride on the perils in life and thrown away every happiness just when it's going to reach you. In the end, what? You went berserk and murdered your second( or was it first? make up your mind, woman!) husband , then went without a struggle with the police and get your head hacked off. The book is full of your pathetic cries and how beautiful you are. Summary: Beauty kills.
No.3: Alec D'uberville, a fly
An insect throughly. Constantly harasses Tess and irritates both Tess and the reader with an unrivalled annoyance. Swat it, it comes back, and never flies off. The constant bugging noise is bound to get on someone's nerves, and so PLACK, a knife goes in, he stops breathing. FINALLY, justice is served.
No.4: Angel Clare, not an angel
You claim to love Tess and yet cruelly abandoned her upon knowing of her history which she has tried to tell you and reject your advances. Then you are in triple minds as to whether you should accept her, leave far away forever , or take another dairymaid in place of Tess. You knew you love her, and you know she loves you. Still, you stayed in Brazil for a gazillion reasons and never came to her rescue. Even though you might not have known, what kind of a husband are you anyway?
I so dislike the triangle. All three of them have their faults and i absolutely hate their two minds about everything. Not to mention how the fly dishonoured Tess and caused her her real chance of happiness. Angel, for knowing how much the love is mutual, yet stayed away until too late. Then he left just as Tess told him to. Regret always comes late, then the oh-so-finally reconcilation is definitely short-lived as well. As for Tess...first you blame yourself for causing the death of the horse, then you blame yourself for falling victim to Alec and claiming you were merely a child, then you blame Alec for dishonouring you, then you blame yourself for falling in love with Angel and not able to marry him, then you blame your beauty because Angel is not there to admire it when it is duly his, then you blame Angel for not returning, then you blame Angel when he did return , though late, and then you blame Alec for having persuaded you to marry him.
Hello?
If you had been me, you'd torn the book apart by now. Mine's still intact, and i'm looking at it with extreme hate.
At least Wuthering Heights had some exciting parts towards the end after the dreary beginning and story-telling and awful Heathcliff. At least Hareton was always a gemstone deliberately buried by Heathcliff, and always seeks to increase his knowledge and is a charming lad. At least Wuthering Heights had a happy ending, but i still hate Catherine's mother, Catherine.
