The strangest thing happened to me on the way home today.
I was walking out of my building and down the road to where I needed to cross to get to my bike. I got to the lights, but didn't push the crossing button - there's always an eventual gap in traffic, and if you press the button, the gap comes before the lights turn red and all the poor suckers have to stop at a red light for nobody because you've already crossed.
Anyway.
There was a lady who had been walking behind me, and she stopped near me, waiting to cross too. She didn't push the button either. She was maybe late 40s, 5'8, a bit overweight, curly brown hair, pinkish framed glasses, carying a bag and an umbrella - she looked like someone's mum or aunt. Maybe a bit of a cat lady.
Anyway.
We crossed the road in a gap in traffic (by this stage I'm walking a little behind her), when she stopped at my bike, turned to me as I started to put on my helmet, and said "You're one of them, aren't you?"
This being the LAST thing I expected, I just kinda laughed and said "I'm a lot of things, love." Then she just walked away like nothing had happened. It wasn't even an accusatory tone, it was like she was saying "It's a hot day, isn't it?"
Bloody bizarre.
