ENDEAVOUR-134 :: LAST TOUCHDOWN

Jun 04, 2011 05:52

Thank you, Endeavour!

Houston! Houston! Roger...

"It's sad to see her land for the last time, but she really has a great legacy," radioed Commander Mark Kelly as the wheels touched down.
"It is really, really an incredible ship."

RCS, Aero Systems Controlling Endeavour

Weather was observed "go"
and Endeavour glided to a stop on the Shuttle Landing Facility's Runway 15 at 2:35 a.m. EDT, bringing an end to the STS-134 mission.

The small thrusters of the reaction control system and the aerodynamic surfaces on Endeavour are sharing control of the shuttle as it descends through the atmosphere to a landing at Kennedy.

Air Traffic Control
NASA Air Traffic Controller Larry Parker monitors air traffic from the control tower moments before space shuttle Endeavour makes its final landing at Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility.

Endeavour and its crew capped a wildly successful mission to deliver a $2 billion cosmic ray detector to the International Space Station with a 2:35 a.m. landing on Runway 15 here at Kennedy Space Center.

"What a great ending to this really wonderful mission that we just got to witness," NASA space operations chief William Gerstenmaier said in a post-landing news conference.

Endeavour's Stellar Career
Wed, 01 Jun 2011 10:07:39 AM GMT+0300

Space shuttle Endeavour's career began in 1992 with the STS-49 mission. The shuttle is NASA's youngest and its resume includes the first repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope and the first construction mission of the International Space Station. This shuttle flew 25 missions, spent 299 days in space, orbited Earth 4,671 times and traveled 122,883,151 miles.

Endeavour on Final Approach
Wed, 01 Jun 2011 09:33:25 AM GMT+0300

Commander Mark Kelly is lining Endeavour up with the runway. Landing gear will be lowered momentarily as the shuttle flares before touchdown. The shuttle will touchdown at 215 mph.

First S-turn

The crew also included Pilot Greg H. Johnson and mission specialists Michael Fincke, Andrew Feustel, Greg Chamitoff and European Space Agency astronaut Roberto Vittori. All were veteran space fliers.

Endeavour's mission drew intense attention not only because it was the shuttle program's next-to-last flight, but also for the personal drama that surrounded Kelly.

Ahead of landing, Kelly reflected on his decision to stick with the flight while his wife, Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, continued her recovery from a gunshot wound to the head in a January assassination attempt.

"In hindsight, it was absolutely the right decision," said Kelly, who was expected to return to Houston today to see Giffords.

Endeavour's on-time landing capped a 16-day mission to the International Space Station, and brought the space shuttle program a giant step closer to retirement.

Hatches Closed For Final Time Between Endeavour and Station
Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Sun, 29 May 2011 06:36:54 -0500

Shortly after 7 a.m. EDT, the six crew members of space shuttle Endeavour said farewell to the three Expedition 28 crew members aboard the International Space Station. At 7:23 a.m., hatches were closed between Endeavour and the station 12 days, 22 hours and 27 minutes into the mission. The hatches between the two spacecraft were opened at 7:38 a.m. on May 18 and were open for joint crew operations for a total of 10 days, 23 hours, and 45 minutes.

During the docked operations, the crew delivered and installed the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-2 to study cosmic particles and the ExPRESS Logistics Carrier 3 with spare parts, and performed four spacewalks to perform maintenance and install components on the station, including the Enhanced International Space Station Boom Assembly that marked the completion of the U.S. Orbital Segment of the station.

И астронавты выполнили сложное и ответственное задание на отлично, и сам шаттл не подкачал.
Что ж тут еще можно добавить - молодцы!
