CHARACTER
Name: Alfred Matthew Brenton
Age: 16
Appearance: Alfred is tall and muscular but not incredibly so. He has short black/brown hair and several burn-scars across his body. The main scar is across his left eye, but it does continue down his left side of his body. He usually wears plain black trousers with a red t-shirt and blue hoodie. He carries a small locket with a picture of his mum inside and her wedding ring.
Chosen PB: Jim Sturgess

Personality: When Alfred was younger, he was quite hyperactive and inquisitive. He wanted to know everything and learn everything there and then. But of course, he had to wait until he was ten before he started his training with fire. But after his mother died, his father started to teach him straight away. He ignored all the other subjects and concentrated on just being a Slag Lancer.

Because of this, Alfred became more reserved. Richard was always telling him to be quiet and calm down so his hyperactivity changed to almost laziness in his work. Even though he learnt Lancing from an earlier age than most, his now idleness to learn meant he wasn’t ready to fight the magma when it counted the most.

But this also gave him an advantage outside of his father’s range. Down in the city, he acts so bored that none of the locals realise his heritage. Though he never managed to make any friends, he never met the same fate as his mother.

Although he never seemed to want to learn how to be a Slag Lancer, mainly because he was five and his father was shouting at him to create fire, that didn’t stop him from exploring the caverns inside the volcano. He came across a nest of Fire Spiders which he befriended and when they were in danger, he used his skill and knowledge to rescue them. This shows how much he cares for his friends.

Alfred’s intelligence has also been dampened by his father’s reaction to his mother’s death. Being forced to practice with the magma every day, has left him without a regular education and thus , he cannot communicate with anything other than words.

World Information: A long time ago, when the world was young, everyone lived in small villages. The world was littered with volcanoes and there wasn’t a village who couldn’t be hit by one if they exploded. But there was a group of people who could tame the magma and move it away from their homes. These people called themselves the Slag Lancers and decided to move away from their own village and take up residence one in each other village to save it from any more erupting volcanoes. As this happened, they created lava walls which would protect the village for years to come before moving onto other villages.

Once the world grew older, and people moved from villages to larger cities, the Slag Lancers decided to retreat closer to the volcanoes so that the city wouldn’t need to be troubled. So instead of living with everyone else as they had always done, the Slag Lancers lived on the volcano side and got strange looks for living so close to disaster.

Because of the new divide, their two cultures moved apart and so, nowadays, the old lava walls are a thing of mystery (like the pyramids on Earth) and the people who live on the volcano side are just crazy people who aren’t seen often enough to be real, but enough that parents can scare they children to sleep at night with the stories.

History: Alfred was born at the side of the Volcano Modor, which was one of three volcanoes overlooking the city of Gyden. Both his father, Richard, and his mother, Isabel, were Slag Lancers and helped save the city from eruptions. But when he was five years old, his mother went into the city to buy food and other supplies. There were a group of men who disliked the crazy volcano-side dwellers and decided to teach them a lesson by murdering Isabel.

This changed Richard completely. He turned from being a loving father to an angry husband. He spent the next ten years working himself too hard and teaching Alfred his birth right. Because of the way he was taught, Alfred never really enjoyed his lessons but he kept up with them because he didn’t want to anger his father.

When Alfred was seven, he was hiding from his father underneath his parents’ bed and found a ring. It recognised it as his mother’s wedding ring. Too scared to show to his father, he carries it always to keep a part of her close to him and give him strength and courage in the future.

At the age of sixteen, Volcano Modor erupted but because it was going to destroy the people who had killed his wife, Richard didn’t want to stop it. He wanted to punish them for what they did. So Alfred leapt in instead. He used all his training to try and stop the magma but it was too powerful for him. He became engulfed in it and severely burnt. His father, realising his mistakes, stepped in and saved both the city and his son. But when Alfred awoke, Richard didn’t have the heart to tell him he failed.

So, to this day, Alfred believes he conquered the magma and survived with a few burns.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Alfred’s abilities are his main strengths. He has been forced to practice every day and is therefore good at what he does. But he’s still not the best because of how he was taught. He is also very loyal to his family and their traditions. He taught himself to read so he could learn about his history but he can’t write much. He worries that his father will shout at him for wasting his time if he found out.

Abilities: Alfred is a Slag Lancer by birth. This means he can create small amount of fire from his hands and move large amounts of lava or magma using his hands and his mind. He can also use his fire to take away the pain of other burns, though he cannot heal the burns the magma or lava creates.

First Person: Okay this is just weird. Where’s the volcanoes? And…[He shivered on the camera] it’s really cold. [He lit up a flame using both hands before realising he should stop the one he had the watch in, though it had not a scratch on it.] That’s just…[He moved out of the train station and looked around further] Can anyone here explain what’s going on?

Third Person: Alfred made sure his dad was asleep before creeping out of the house. He slid down the bank and into the volcano. Breathing in the heat, he grinned and made his way down the nearest magma pocket.

But instead of practising, he took a left and walked along a thin ridge to a large ridge he’d found a few years back. That’s where his best friends lived. The spiders. They greeted him with clicks and crawled over his shoes. Alfred sat against the wall as the biggest one moved over to him. This was Douglas, Stanley’s first born and the one Alfred wanted to keep in the house.

He stroked his head before moving to check his back legs. He’d had an accident a few months ago in the magma but he was healing nicely. Alfred gave him a quick kiss in the top of the head before rubbing the wounds with his fire to soothe them.

He enjoyed his time with his spider friends, though he wished he could understand what their clicks meant. He was sure they understood him which made things unfair but he dealt with it. He may not understand what every click meant, but he knew their moods and their tones like family.

After a few hours playing with his friends, Alfred bid them goodnight and walked home, hoping his father hadn’t woken up. Because if he had, he’d get one hell of a scolding.
