I, like millions of other Youtubers, have always loved nigahiga's videos. He's hilarious, smart, and ok I admit it, kind of cute. lol. One of his amazing talents, to me, was his ability to make fun of things or rant against things without ever being truly offensive.
But I gotta say, for the first time I honestly think one of his videos was kind of in poor taste. jmho.
In one of his latest, "Why Chris Brown Beat Rihanna," the concept is funny, as usual - he uses lyrics from both of their songs to create a conversation. What I hate is the situation he created. It's basically Rihanna being a total naggy ridiculous bitch, Chris Brown just taking it for awhile (the "good" one. of course), then finally she says she likes Jesse McCartney better, he snaps, she cowers and begs, he approaches, camera goes out.
A few things wrong here~
- the classic portrayal of women as obnoxious nags, and the poor guys who have to grin and bear it
- the classic portrayal of women as physically helpless. she can verbally lash him all she wants, but the minute he starts in on her, she starts whimpering and begging for mercy
- the suggestion that Rihanna asked for it because she was so obnoxious. the suggestion that her obnoxiousness deserves such a punishment. bitch had it coming, basically
- the glossing over of the fact that he frickin beat. her. up. the idea that the kind of violence he used is acceptable, and that it's funny. this is the central issue here, that he thinks it's okay to parody something so serious. I won't post or link to pics of Rihanna post-beating because I think it's horrid that they actually got released, but I trust most of us have seen them by now, and I find it despicable what he did to her
I always tend to over-think things, and overreact over absolutely nothing. It gets me into trouble. Which is why I won't even bother commenting on the video or anything, and will just post my thoughts here.
Again, if you don't overthink like me, the video is very funny. I just can't enjoy it, because, well...I'm like that. lol
