It's hard to climb the clock tower with his hands full of ice cream bars, even though he's used to it by now, and Pence nearly trips as he reaches the top.
"Whoa, careful," Hayner cautions as he reaches over to take one. "Don't go falling off on us."
Pence passes another bar over to Olette. "Thanks," she says, smiling. Then she blinks. "Um, Pence?"
"Yeah?"
"There's one extra."
Pence looks down. There are still two ice cream bars left in his hand. "That's... weird." He tries to think back. "For some reason I just... felt like I should get four."
"Man, what a waste of money," Hayner sighs, flopping back against the stone.
"Sorry," Pence says. He sets the extra bar next to him on the ledge and leans back, looking out over the sunny rooftops.
It's peaceful then, sitting with his two best friends in the world, in the same spot, eating the same ice cream they've eaten all their lives. But as he watches the unwanted ice cream bar melt in the sun, Pence feels a little sad.
He can't think why.
