Chapter 13
I had just came back from our turn to bath in the lake whilst Jung Yunho was still dressing. I had escaped his intense gaze, his eyes raking over my bared skin as I had flushed in embarrassment and shyness. He had pulled me back to him and our lips met in all quietness. I had sighed quietly and let our lips brush for one last time, before I had pushed him away with a chuckle. “See you later, Jung Yunho-ssi…” I had whispered and he had grinned and proceeded to dress himself.
When I came back to our resting spot, the other guards were eyeing me in a rather hostile manner. I had passed all men and had almost reached my own spot when I heard them. Those words.
“Vulgar peasant.”
The moment they were said, I knew it was about me.
About which other person else?
I didn’t dare to turn around and check who it was, because what could I do? Sure, I could defend myself and fight off the man, but no other guard would take my side or help me fight of the guard. I was the outsider here.
“Dirt.” The same man spoke again.
Another man joined him. “Didn’t know people were this low.”
I bit my lower lip in disdain and then without thinking turned around and stared at the group. All of them were frowning and disapprovingly looking at me and I knew all of them knew about Jung Yunho and me. I glared at them and questioned them with a - I hope it would be - fierce stare.
“Don’t look like that, scum,” the man said and got up.
“Like what?” My voice came out stronger than I thought it would. “What dare you say about me? Who are you to say things like this?”
The man let out a breathy laughter which sent shivers down my spine. “You worthless piece of shit.”
In one movement I had picked up my bow and drew the string back, the arrow pointing at the man in barely a second. One eye tightly closed, while I focused on getting the weapon point straight at his throat.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” he said and laughed hysterically. “That Jung learnt you something useful after all! I thought you were only a fuck to him!”
“You may have courage to insult me, but you should have never insulted him,” I shouted as I drew the string back to its highest point.
“Why not?” the man taunted. “Because your dirty presence can’t take it that I think ill and talk bad about your precious lord?”
A hiss escaped my lips and I let go of the string. The arrow dashed across the short space in a flash, only to end up not hitting the guard, for just the moment the weapon would hit him someone pushed him out of the way.
Jung Yunho.
My mouth was agape and I let out a whimper when I saw the arrow was pierced into his upper arm. My knees trembled and my hands lost all feeling, the bow falling down into the grass and the grass rustled quietly as I faltered to Jung Yunho. The red fabric turned darker from blood and as I continued my way to him, the other men began to take in what just happened.
“Lee,” Jung Yunho said darkly as he stared at the man who he had just saved.
The man gulped under the murderous stare the leader gave him.
“You will face the consequences of your actions. Just let me think about a punishment that fits you the best.”
“My lord…” the man kneeled deeply, his face on the ground as he begged for forgiveness.
“I am not the one you should apologise to,” Jung Yunho said and then turned his attention to the arrow still stuck in his arm. With barely a flinch, he pulled the arrow free and then looked at me. I was still staggering, halfway the field and when I had reached him, he gave me the arrow in silence. My hands trembled as I accepted it with opened hands and stared at him in disbelief. “Jung Yun-Yunho-ssi…”
He showed me a strained smile before he eyed all the men. “One more time and I will not be this placable. No one, like Lee, regards others like this ever again. Mind my words when I say you will taste your own blood before you will die. I do not care who it is.”
He turned around and softly called my name out in all quietness. “Jaejoong-ssi… If you could please follow me.”
I threw the arrow on the ground and followed him quickly. Just outside the field he fell down onto his knees and clutched his arm in pain. I fell down in front of him and helped him to push the fabric to his shoulder, baring his arm and wound to me. My teeth sank down into my bottom lip and I felt the tears well up in my eyes. I was the one who had caused this. I had hurt him.
Without thinking, I ripped a piece off the bottom of my uniform and held the fabric softly against the wound. “We need to clean it,” I whispered quietly. “We should go to the lake and fresh it up.”
Startled, I looked at him when I felt his hand cup my cheek tenderly. His thumb stroke over my skin softly. “You were so brave.”
I shook my head. “I am so sorry… Look what I have done to you…”
He chuckled. “Call me by my name and I will be cured.”
In all quietness I stared at him, until something triggered me to shout, “Are you fucking kidding me?!”
His eyes widened in shock and his hand left my cheek as his arm lifelessly dropped down.
“You could have been dead! Or heavily wounded! What first name? What? This is such bullshit! I should have never come to this place, go on this trip, because look in what mess you are now!” I cried out, spit leaving my mouth as I screamed out to my heart’s content.
I yelped when he growled and grabbed my arm rather harshly. “Jaejoong-ssi.”
“No!” I heatedly stared at him, tears escaping from the corner of my eyes. “I should leave! All guards will lose their respect for you!” I let out a deep sigh. “I should have never given in…” I whispered.
Jung Yunho threw me onto the ground and I looked up at him, fidgeting under his body weight I struggled to free myself. “Take that back,” he said before he forcefully kissed me. I hit his chest and then his wounded arm and he groaned out into the air. I kicked him off me and scrambled away.
Out of breath we stared at each other, Jung Yunho clutching his arm and he groaned out in pain. I shook my head stubbornly and helped me up to get him to the lake.
As a grump left my lips, I pushed him down and kneeled beside him, starting to clean the wound and wipe away the blood. I felt his heated stare on me, but I paid no heed to him, proceeding to take care of his injury.
Carefully, I put the make-shift bandage across the wound and bound it securely with a not-too tight knot. All this happened in pure quietness and after the task was done, I focused on the man in front of me again.
“Jaejoong-ssi…”
My eyelids fluttered close. I still felt so shy when he used my given name.
“Jaejoong-ssi, please, tell me you do not regret going with me…”
I met his eyes. They seemed endlessly deep and filled with broken feelings.
I hurt him.
Not only physically, but also his feelings.
Softly, I let my fingers travel from the bandaged wound over to his shoulder. As my hand ended up in his neck, I swallowed my saliva before I leant in and let my eyes rake over his lips. “Yunho-ssi…” I whispered quietly and breathed against his lips for long moments before I kissed him. I swallowed his breathy gasp of surprise and forced myself tighter against him.
“You will take full responsibility for it, you said so,” I breathed heavily before I pressed closer again. My lips moving over his and then he followed my lead, kissing me back and teasingly biting down on my bottom lip. I let out a breathy moan and playfully traced his lips with the tip of my tongue. He cradled me close to him whilst we shuddered in each other’s arms.
The moistness and the heat of his mouth became too much for me as I felt my head spin from dizziness. I ended the kiss and pulled away from him.
I felt guilty all of a sudden. Without us knowing what the guards were doing, we were kissing each other instead. Jung Yunho was supposed to be the proud and stern leader, not some random person who went off sneaking and do peculiar things with a mere commoner.
A kiss was trusted on my forehead as Jung Yunho’s lips brushed over the pale skin.
“Let us go back and check on my guards,” Jung Yunho said softly and helped me to get up.
* * *
The short speech Jung Yunho had given still lingered about in my mind.
“You can choose to be honourable and follow me to the village as we have sworn to our lord we would do, or you can choose the despicable other option and be a coward,” Jung Yunho had said. When no one dared to say anything he had nodded his head firmly. “Let us get going, then.”
I was in the middle of the group when we arrived at a small stream and we had to cease our fast pace. One by one the horses crossed the water and whilst all I didn’t notice I was the only one still on the other side. I focussed on slowly urging the horse to move forwards, but the poor animal was afraid somehow. I jumped of the horse and walked in front of it, pulling it along with me, but it simply refused to take another step.
“Let me help.” I heard Jung Yunho’s voice behind me and I turned around with a smile on my face, that quickly faltered, though.
I let out a disoriented shout as I saw the group of guards taking off. Jung Yunho turned around as well and with a curse leaving his mouth, he hurried to his horse and climbed on it, dashing away the moment he sat. I groaned as I quickly pulled the horse along with me, not bothering to coo it.
At last, I made it to the other side and I quickly climbed on the animal and spurred it on to start moving.
I dashed through the trees and with a yelp I grabbed the neck of the animal when it reared. I managed to calm the horse down, when Jung Yunho was suddenly beside it and helped to make the horse at ease.
Bewildered, I then stared at him. Jung Yunho was covered in a layer of sweat and he still panted slightly.
“W-What… What happened?” I stammered.
“They took off, those bastards,” he said and let out a string of swear words. “They must have planned it when we were gone.”
“You did not manage to catch them?”
“They were damn too fast,” he said with clenching teeth. He let out another curse and kicked against the tree closest to him. “Damn it.”
I climbed off the horse and lowered myself onto the ground with a soft thud. I looked at him in worry. “And now?”
“Now?” he stared at me, frowning and looking distressed. “We will continue on our own. We do not need cowards to help us with our search.”
