Of Bruised Foreheads and Handsome Strangers

Jaejoong always fell down; may it be literally, may it be figuratively speaking, the boy always fell down. Tripping over his own feet was such a common thing to him that he felt betrayed by his own body.

Of course, he wasn’t the only one who knew about his graceless nature.

The boy’s clumsy actions were well-known to those around him as countless failures had already happened in the past (e.g. his friends had laughed and pitied him when he had fallen down when walking past his crush, his family had shouted at him when he had crushed the birthday cake of his little brother by landing on it with full body weight and even some strangers on the train had been recognising him as the boy who always tripped over his own feet).

Never had those falling activities lead to any positivity; misfortune, unhappiness, embarrassment; you name it…

Not once… until that very faithful day.

Jaejoong was a freshman in university that year and even though he had been so excited in the beginning, travelling by train every single day made him regret his choice of applying to his favourite university. The travelling was such a distress to him that he despised the public transport more than his own clumsy actions.

He let out a dreadful sigh when the train arrived, the doors opening with a woosh. He dragged his body inside and his eyes were already raking over the heads of the passengers.

Taken. Taken. Taken. Taken. Ta- Empty!

A small smile was formed on his lips as he spotted the empty seat. He thanked the gods for being so generous that morning and he quickly made his way towards it before anyone else could snatch it sooner than him. Barely five steps later he felt himself fall to the ground. With a hard smack he hit his forehead against an elbow rest and he then lay sprawled out in the walk way.

Some laughed, but others voiced their discomfort as they saw the rather painful smash the boy had endured.

Jaejoong lay there like a starfish, whimpering and inwardly cursing himself. He shut his eyes and wished he could just disappear. His forehead would be so bruised by tomorrow. How lucky he was with his black bangs always in front of it.

A worried voice inquired, “Are you alright?”

Jaejoong rubbed his forehead and scrambled up to his feet. He bowed to the man whom he had hit the seat of and then realised it was the empty seat he had been eyeing. “I am so sorry.”

“Come, sit down,” the man said kindly.

Jaejoong wanted anything but sit down between all those people who had witnessed his clumsy being.

The man leant forwards as Jaejoong still hadn’t looked at him. Jaejoong’s words instantly died when he saw the handsome man who was still looking worriedly at him. Tanned skin, bow-shaped lips and kind-looking light-brown eyes. Suddenly he felt very dizzy, his hands touched his cheeks and his eyelashes kissed his cheeks as he closed his eyes and inhaled sharply. He tried to calm down his racing heart.

A yelp left his lips when he found the stranger’s hands on his shoulders as the man pushed him down on the empty seat next to his.

“Are you alright? God, you hit your head pretty hard after all!”

Jaejoong nodded his head before he replied quietly, “I’m alright… perfectly ‘right…”

“Are you sure?” The man’s left hand was still on his shoulder, softly squeezing down. “How come you fell?”

“I tripped…” Jaejoong’s cheeks tinted red in embarrassment. “…over my feet.”

“Be careful next time,” the man said. “Someone as good-looking as you shouldn’t danger himself like that…”

Jaejoong stilled and blinked up at the other in surprise. “I’m sorry?”

The man tried to laugh it away, awkwardly scratching his head. “Err… Sorry… I didn’t mean to say it like that…”

Jaejoong couldn’t help but smile, “You always flirt like this?”

“And you always try to seduce people by falling around?”

Jaejoong rolled his eyes with a chuckle.

Thirty minutes had passed and it then was that Jaejoong’s stop was the next one. The train ride had never been so much fun to him; the pleasant chat he had with the handsome stranger made him feel delighted and a little flustered.

“It’s my stop after this one.” Jaejoong revealed the information with a sad smile. The man nodded his head, frowning a bit. “Well, it was nice talking to you,” Jaejoong said and got up.

“Wait,” the man said and quickly took something out of his pocket. “Call me?”

Jaejoong accepted the business card with widely-opened eyes. He stammered his thank you and stared at the stylish-printed card.

Jung Yunho

His profession, telephone number and an e-mail address were also on it.

The train halted and Jaejoong bowed to the stranger who now had a name.

“Call me, okay?”

Jaejoong smiled and nodded. He was already halfway turned around when Yunho called him again. “Wait, what’s your name?”

“Jaejoong. Kim Jaejoong.”

1 year later

“Yunho!” Jaejoong shouts. He already has a wide grin on his face from just seeing his boyfriend.

Yunho turns around as he hears his lover’s call from far away. He instantly smiles when he sees the mop of black hair dancing along with Jaejoong’s sprint.

“I missed you-” Yunho doesn’t even manage to finish his sentence as the other trips over his feet. A yelp leaves the rosy plump lips and Yunho cringes and quickly opens his arms and barely manages to catch Jaejoong; Yunho’s arms safely encaging the tiny waist.

With a shy smile Jaejoong lets out a soft chuckle, looking up at Yunho he says, “Sorry, I’m such a clumsy fool.”

“That’s why I love you,” Yunho replies as he helps him onto his feet. His fingers then brushes over the pale, cushiony cheeks. “You're just so precious, my Jaejoongie.”
