Question about racism and racial sensitivity

Tell it to everyone who looks at me sideways when I walk in the Gap. Tell it to every waiter who decides I won't tip well enough to make it worth his while when I walk in a restaurant. Tell it to every middle-aged white lady who asked me when I was 13 if my two-year-old cousin was my son. Tell it to every Best Buy employee who knows I don't need any help when I'm looking at computer parts or games but thinks I probably do when looking at CDs and DVDs. Tell it to everyone who's ever called me bright and articulate and sounded surprised about it. Tell it to everyone who's asked me what's wrong with me for not having kids by the age of 26. People associate black-skinned people with a lot of things, and I'd have to hate an awful lot of people if I thought they all did it on purpose.

ETA:And it's not just racial stuff. Like my creepy cousin, there was one night where he climbed into bed with me and told me he loved me. I told him I wanted him to leave me alone and that he was making uncomfortable. He kept playing with my hair and saying, "Why's that?" Only he'd drop the "th" so it sounded like "whyzat," and it makes my skin crawl when I hear people say that. I fucking hate the sound of it. And there's no logical reason why it should bother me as much as it does. It just reminds me of a feeling that I really don't like. And I just think that unless things get significantly better for the country before this term is up, the next time a black man runs for president, people are going to be reminded of how they feel now.
