Round Eared Cap, from
Kannik's Korner Pattern KK-6602. Made using cheap white cotton muslin and cotton thread.
Review-wise, the directions for this cap were very good! This cap is good for any ladies' day outfit from 1740 to around 1820-ish, according to the pattern. There were detailed images of the stitches and each step was straight forward and easy to follow. I learned a ton of new information. ^_^ Oh, it would be easy, of course, to sew by machine, too.

Step 1: I attached the two headpiece sides together and did a running stitch to attach them. Then I felled the seam to finish it (You can see the flat felled center seam in the next step).
Step 2: I used a rolled hem to finish the edges of the headpiece:
Step 3: Here, I did a button-hole stitch to make the eyelet for the drawstring at the base of the caul:
Step 4: This step I folded the edges down and did a simple hem stitch along the base of the caul:
Step 5: This step was a little more complicated - I did whipped gathers over the rolled edge of the crown of the caul. This part will attach to the headpiece (after it has been gathered, of course).
Step 6: Pretty straight forward - I did a rolled hem along the curved side of the ruffle:
Step 7 and 8: I did whipped gathers over the rolled edge of the straight side of the ruffle, exactly as I had with the crown of the caul. The next step, of course, was pulling the gathers. Or whatever it's called. I didn't take photos of me pulling the gathers because I needed both hands for that. ^_~
Step 9: Here, I attached the gathered edge of the caul to the headpiece using what the directions called an "overhand stitch."
Step 10: Just like step nine, except I attached the ruffle to the headpiece using that same overhand stitch.
I didn't take pictures of me adding the drawstring to the base of the caul. But here's me, with the whole thing finished. Doesn't the cap fit perfectly with my nifty corporate America shirt? Hehe! ^_^
For the next one I'll have to enlarge the caul somewhat. I have a lot of hair. Heh. Side view:
Stuff learned: fell seam (knew theory but never did before), "rolled edge," whipped gathers, attaching a whip gathered piece, over-hand stitch
