I'm a true pushover for Dwarf-Elf interactions, and this is a wonderful one. Thran's fully in character here, and Dorin is an excellent, very "dwarvish" character. Loved the details of the lost wax casting, a popular technique amongst my Noldorin smiths, hence my bias. The dialog snaps and sparks -- excellent!
One nit, if you don't mind, that I did not catch when this was in the Lizard Council:
I did. Now, this piece is special, unique. I would not want to see it hanging off every neck in Eregion.
There seems to be a problem with continuity when reading the above in the context of the previous remark:
"Do not hold me accountable for that," Thranduil protested. "My father's folk have little love for the Golodhrim ourselves. And I hear tell it did not turn out well for that elf in the end. This is partly payback for that old insult, is it not?"
From the above, I'm guessing the timeframe for the fic is after the fall of Ost-in-Edhil, no? If so, I would guess that Thran doesn't need to worry much about a design being popular in Eregion as there'd be few to no folks to wear such in residence.
Of course, I could be misreading this. Wouldn't be the first time I didn't grasp something in my dotage. ;^)
Oh, crap -- I meant Eriador. This story takes place about a year before Thranduil and Oropher march south to Mordor with the armies of the Last Alliance, roughly 3432-3433 S.A. and I'm assuming some kind of Mannish folk living in the Westlands with whom the Dwarves of Moria did their business.
Looks like I have some editing to do. Thank you for catching that.
