summary: Jihwan makes a promise.

Jihwan makes a promise, that they'll dance together again as soon as he's free. Granted, that leaves a six-month period in between now and then, what with Jihwan being overseas and all. But Sungmin is patient, he understands. He understands when Jihwan tells him they won't be able to keep in contact, he's never really cared for online communication, and he doesn't text all that much. Sungmin understands that he'd probably be too busy to contact him anyway. And so he waits.

Sungmin is busy too, practicing and promoting and practicing some more. But when he has free time, he always seems to end up in the dance studio again, working until he sweats. He wants to be flawless next time. And even if six months is not enough time to achieve perfection, Sungmin tries.

When he's been missing too long, Chanmi usually comes looking for him, hand on her hip as she sighs and tilts her head. "No matter how much you practice Sungmin-ah, you can't expect to be the best, can you?"

The corners of Sungmin's mouth lift at the thought. "No," he laughs. "But I'm gonna be second."

Sungmin stops in the Open World headquarters one day, to get an official date for The BOSS' return, and his face lights up when he finds out it's coming so soon. He's anxious the whole way back to the dorm, and practically slams into Taewoon on the way to the practice room. Sungmin quickly apologizes and mumbles out an explanation, and Taewoon endearingly ruffles his hair and sends him off, shaking his head with a smirk.

Sungmin dances past exhaustion, and doesn't allow himself to stop until he's happy with the performance he gives.

A few days later when Jihwan walks in the building for the first time in months, he checks for messages not expecting to find any. He can't help the surprise on his face when he's told "that boy" came looking for him. He doesn't have to ask anything more. Not bothering to hold back an amused smile, he looks up the address of co.ed's dorm. After checking his schedule, he sends Sungmin a letter with the time and place for them to meet.

When the day finally comes, Sungmin stands outside The BOSS' practice room with sweaty palms. At this point he's not sure whether he's anxious about seeing Jihwan or proving himself, but he couldn't care less because the nerves are the same.

The second he opens the door, Jihwan hits the stereo and the music starts. Sungmin is frozen for a few seconds, and silently blinks. But when Jihwan expectantly smirks and gestures towards the dance floor, Sungmin complies.

They dance until their arms are sore and their legs feel like gelatin, and they both collapse onto the floor while the music continues to play. Jihwan can tell, Sungmin's moves are tighter now, more precise.

"Nice." He pants, and Sungmin laughs a little too heartily. It's not much of a compliment, but Sungmin can tell Jihwan is pleased when there's a knock at the door and Jihwan stands to answer it, but still flashes Sungmin a grin as he passes. Hyunchul pokes his head in and whispers something to Jihwan that Sungmin doesn't hear, and he instinctively shuts of the stereo.

Jihwan turns back and sends an apologetic shrug, and Sungmin nods. "Thanks Jay-hyung." He bows and begins to leave, and Jihwan can't hold back his laughter. He pats Sungmin on the shoulder as he walks out. "You can call me Jihwan, you know."

It's a small victory, but a victory nonetheless.
