I had an 8-hour bus trip today to DC and back for our homeless advocacy group's congressional reception, and when I came home I was rewarded with new music ( Read more... )

I completely agree with this whole post! I was also reminded of waiting for Tom to first post Empires music and being SO nervous and just wanting it to be decent and then being so pleasantly surprised.

And you're totally right about the first songs being a little weighted down. It's the second songs that will really show what kind of music the groups are going to make and I'm so excited for them.

I kind of love/dread that feeling of waiting for new music to drop -- what if it's fantastic? what if it's horrible?

And I think both panic and tyv need a little time to loosen up and not have everything they say or do seem like it relates back to the split.

Yeah, I agree 10000% about both groups needing to loosen up a bit. I'm really interested to see what they're doing in six months, when things are hopefully less crazy.

The names of the two songs was something that actually had me shaking my head at my computer and saying, "Subtle, guys."

Bless their cotton socks. :D

New Perspective? Change? Whatever could they be talking about?

"Here's the New Song by My New Band that's Totally Different From Anything We Did Before! Really!"

Hah! Yes.

And really good point about Ryan. I do really admire that about him, and I actually think that's something that he and Brendon have in common in some odd way, even though their bravery looks very different. Ryan's very deliberate and seems to plan his moves, while Brendon's more rash and powers through things on sheer stubbornness. It's funny that I've never been that interested in really comparing and contrasting them, but now I'm just fascinated by the ways they are alike and different.

You're right about Brendon, too. It seems to be a common theme with some of these bands -- maybe it's something you need to make a band happen.

one of the things i always liked most about ryan was that pete DID in fact blow him off, seem unimpressed, make ryan chase after him at least a few more times until mostly to prove him wrong he listened to panic's stuff. and that ryan didn't give up.

it's funny, i hadn't really thought about people being mad at ryan "for leaving," though now that you say that i suppose that's as good a summary as any of how many have reacted. i don't care at all about that -- by all means, god, if you're not happy in a bad gtfo, whoever you are.

but, hmm, i'm still not sure i'd see it in the same way or think of it so much as bravery. maybe that's not fair, though, maybe it's harder to leave something successful, though i'm not totally convinced ryan actually gets what it'll be like to start over. and frankly he'll have those little green checks to keep him solvent for a while if he's careful enough about it ( ... )

Well, I absolutely don't think everyone's response to the split has been to be mad at Ryan for leaving, but I have seen several posts that basically said that in so many words, so i don't think it's an uncommon reaction.

But I do think that the real risk here isn't that Ryan will go broke, but that this time if he falls on his face, it won't just be in front of his icon and a small circle of friends, it will be in front of the whole world. I think that's a big risk to ( ... )

his bravery -- his willingness to put himself out there, from the start

I do love that about Ryan too, and I will give him credit for having the balls to decide what he wants, at least for now, and step up and do it. At least he's getting stuff done! I look forward to more from him.

I feel like we've discussed this about Ryan before :) I'm looking forward to more from both groups.
