I was thinking writing this list that these things probably won't come as much of a surprise to anyone who's read my stuff -- I am embarrassingly transparent about what I find romantic.

And I hear you about the things not ending well (believe me, I hear that a lot), but it's so foreign to me, because sometimes there's just nothing more romantic than a doomed love affair :)

The smoking comment made me giggle.

If I could, I'd have a character in every story, but it's so often non-canonical and there's no reason the character we haven't seen smoking would be ...

One of the most frustrating things to me about writing FPS is that in the source material you see so many private moments so that if someone's sneaking cigarettes (or boys or girls) on the side you'd probably see it on the show. In pop you could often get away with saying, sure, they don't do it in front of the *cameras* or something ...

At least with OC, we have Ryan canonically smoking. And Seth with the pot. And I feel like there are a number of other situations where you can finesse.

But yeah, damn. When you don't have the excuse of "they wouldn't on camera!" it becomes so much harder.

I agree with all of these, particularly the smoking one. I don't smoke, I really don't like the smell of cigarette smoke, but in movies and in stories there's just *something* about a character smoking.

I don't mind the smell of cigarette smoke (too many years of living with smokers, probably) but there is something romantic and sexy to me about someone smoking.

just so you know -- i mean, you know this, right? -- without you being such a fan of #1 (especially: the other person just makes sure they're right there the whole time, maybe bitching about it and maybe joking but always there. It's a kind of hurt/comfort thing, I suppose, but a very specific kind, where the hurt is in some way self-inflicted, and the comfort isn't so much of the "I will save you!" or "Let me help you!" kind, but more along the lines of, "You're going to have to get yourself out of this, no one else can do it for you, but you don't think I'd leave you alone while you're working on it, do you?") -- i'm in parenthetical hell now but without "failure" i never in a million years would have found the long run, which in its own way seems to be the story i'll write again and again.

I don't think I'd ever made the connection from "failure" to "the long run", but you're making me a little sentimental! Also, it's funny that you mention the story you'll write again and again, because doing this reminded me of when we were all talking about our One True Story ages ago, and I looked up my old entry about it and almost cut and pasted it as number 5 but at this point I figure my One True Story is pretty obvious, plus I already had 5 romantic things.

Also also, congrats on the move! Even though I'm not planning to go till the fall I'm spending lots of time on craigslist and the like contemplating new apartments.

baby, i swear, i gave you credit at the time. :) if by credit i mean i acknowledge how much i ripped it off. for example:

I kind of like to live in post-band-land, but even more than the others, JaeW's Failure left its mark all over this. And it all came down to Chris knowing that the story's better if someone else tells it.

and, mmm, one true story. where's your old entry, do you still have it handy? i'm contemplating this one. maybe when i (if i ever do) get unpacked...

come find me and catch me up about the fall sometime, OK?
