I will have a student teacher in the spring, and I am really looking forward to it, but I also feel a little bit guilty.
She has already observed my classes some this fall, and has taught one practise lesson, according to ETSU's requirements. She did a good job, and I plan to turn one of my US history classes over to her almost immediately. However, I have mixed feelings about giving up my other one, although I will probably give it to her, too. I think she ought to take two classes a day as soon as possible, so she can get the full experience of teaching as much as possible (I started teaching one class almost on my own on day 2, completely on my own by week 2, and had two classes a day by week 3). I also would enjoy have a course load of one Modern History class per day.
I feel guilty about this, though, if not for the reason one might expect. I certainly feel no guilt about putting my work off on others--as long as it is being done well, I do not feel the need to do it myself. I do, though, feel bad because I know (and like) several of the students who are scheduled to be in my classes next spring. I have even had a few pass me in the halls and tell me they look forward to having my class again. At least one (according to a guidance counselor) specifically requested placement in my class, and I hate to let any of them down.
I will probably keep my last class of the day for a few weeks, at least, before turning it over, but I'll feel sort of bad when I do.
I guess I'll take the edge of the bad feelings with a 90-minute nap each day at that time.
