I'm BACK! - The British Museum - IMAGE HEAVY

Mar 21, 2011 13:25

I got back into Colorado at 7:30pm last night as I ended up with an half hour delay due to the rain in LA (I feel for everyone there--I was only there two hours but it was INSANE!). I got home about 10:30pm and didn't even unpack, I just Passed. Out.

I then woke up at 6:30am. Go figure.

Anyway, England was absolutely amazing! Some people have probably already seen some of the pictures on my facebook but I posted only a few as I was waiting till I got back home to go through them all. Now, however, I've gone through most of them and have about 250 I'll be printing out and sticking in a photo album. I'm not posting all of them but I thought some of you on my flist might like to see some.

I'm going to put this in separate posts to help with length and the image loads. First up, our trip to the British Museum, then the Doctor Who Experience in London, followed by Historical Tourist Sights in London, my day trip to Cardiff, Wales, and finally, Glastonbury Tor and Caerphilly Castle and Wells Cathedral.

That's the plan, anyway.

Egyptian Section

The entrance of the museum, which has free admittance. It was rainy that day, which is why we did so much inside.

Me in side the museum; the building on my right is the MASSIVE library where they also host special exhibits.

The crown jewel of the museum is probably the Rosetta Stone, which was found by Napolean's forces during his French Expedition to Egypt in 1799. It remained with France until 1801 and has been in the British Museum since 1802. Its the most popular artifact in the entire museum.

Me with the Stone; the reason the Rosetta Stone is so important is because it was the object that first allowed us to correctly translate ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. The top is Ancient Egyptian, the middle is a later demotic script translation of the top, and the bottom is the Ancient Greek translation.

They had a couple entire rooms dedicated to mummies from Egypt they have. This is a poster on one of the cases, showing the x-rays they've done of the still unopened casket that was in the case.

This shows the casket top, suspended just above the mummy, still in the bottom portion of the casket.

To give a size perspective on some of these artifacts, I had Daniel take a picture of me standing by one of them. I'm about 5'6/5'7.

Misc artifacts:

Ancient Greek/Roman Section

This was probably my favorite part of this section, just because of its massive scale. Its an entire temple they uncovered and transported to England many years ago. Daniel has a picture of me and him standing in front of it but he hasn't sent it to me yet.

These next two pictures are to showcase the Pantheon column they have. The first is a scaled model of the Parthenon as it would have looked in its hay-day and the second is part of the one of the actual columns to give a scope of how big the Parthenon is.

Misc. artifacts

There were other sections but you could visit different parts every day for a week and still not have seen everything they have. Since we only had an afternoon, we spent our entire visit in the two sections I was most interested in (Daniel's insistance, not mine).
