Holy Long Journal Entry, Batman!!!

And now for the severe beating of an ancient monster...

Looooooooooong week. I shall endeavour (in this post, ladies and gentlemen-wait no gentlemen that I know of) to try and cram my entire week behind a series of lj cuts. Or just one. Be ye prepared, you have been warned.

After quite a few days of bitching and complaining to Rusty about how much we needed a break, and I, of course, adopted the whiny, spoiled brat attitude, finally convinced him that we were going. I think I even suggested he quit his job. No, wait. That wasn’t me! Disperse, ye evil shoulder demons, ye!

Anyway, so we left on Friday night (and I have to give him kudos for being able to get the entire weekend off with two jobs). I didn’t even know it was Labor Day weekend (I go to Samford. Yes, we don’t celebrate the day of work; we are slaves to Samford’s will until Fall Break in October :D), until we hit Oxford and I was bitching about the speed limit being 55 mph. WTF. Anyway, the trip up was good, although we did get lost on 20. Now I know why I’ve never stayed in ATL before; it’s like NYC. Don’t drive. Just don’t do it.

So, for $150 a night, we stayed in a veeeeeery nice hotel with feather pillows. All the hotels were connected and all were hosting the conference. The Hyatt, the Hilton, and the Marriot. Next year, we’re staying in the Marriot. More quiet. I could live with the people perusing through the lobby till five am (they only yelled every now and then), but the parties that were going on FIVE FLOORS BELOW US has bass thumping through my head all night. I actually wanted to stay up higher in the hotel (I think it had like, twenty floors or something) because it is quiet as the dead up there, but two of the closest people in my life can’t stand heights. *raises fist in war-like salute* For them, I will stay in the Marriot next year!!!!!!!

Moving on. Saturday:

Spent the first part of the day standing in a line (and I place dire emphasis on standing) for our badges. Two and a half hours later, we finally got them. And we went ahead and preregistered for next so no more waiting in that line. I’d chosen to wear my black flip-flops which (and I know this has nothing to do with life in the grand scheme of things) tore my feet to shreds. They’re too worn in. It is true, $26 flip-flops have a shorter life than the $5 ones from Old Navy (where I got my brown ones-yeah, so wore those the rest of the time). After that, we met up with Jamie and Val and wandered around the dealer’s room for a while. I was very proud of Russ and me. We didn’t buy a thing. Yes, eating is more important. :D But alas, my feet starting to disconnect from my ankles, and I totally needed some food. Hence, the food from the food court. There is no such thing as eating healthily during Dragon*Con. Felt better after that. Then, Russ and I went ahead and got in line for the Stargate panel. The guests for this one were Eric Avari, Cliff Simon (he is soooooooooooo just as gorgeous in real life as he is with his eyes glowing), Torri Higginson, Rachel Luttrell, Claire Rankin, Kavan Smith (thud), and Don S. Davis. Don Davis is the sweetest man I have ever seen. He just eats the fans alive. Eric Avari actually brought a video that Dean Devlin had put together about the future of SG-1, so that was really nice. One of the best things was the casts and fans bashing the Sci-Fi channel together. Don Davis gave some great news about what they might be doing with the show now. Movies, another series, etc. Yeah, he totally made us happy. More on him later. Fun panel. I got lotsa pics and videos, but I have yet the desire to upload them onto the computer, so you’ll just have to use your imagination. :)

After that, Russ and I wandered down to the SG track room and hung there for a while. We got front row seats for the behind the scenes talk with Gary Jones (yay for locking chevrons!!!) and Bill Dow (SUCH the cutie). All the stars are just hilarious, and they are so open to our crazy little fandom that we have. Again, have pics, but not now. :D That was pretty much the gist of Saturday.

Sunday:

Totally overslept. Totally missed a signing with the girls of Atlantis. SO blame the bass for that (yeah, that was THAT night). Anyway, almost immediately got in for the next SG panel, and had better seats, IMO. Good stories from this one. But of fucking course, Torri is right in the middle of a hilarious story about her and Richard Dean Anderson and the phrase “bugger me” when the battery on my camera died. Next con, I’m going to ask her to retell it so I can get the whole thing on camera. :D

Other than that, not much really happened on Sunday (or, in general, for that matter). We spent a lot of time hanging out with just me and Russ, but occasionally (when we all happened to be in the room together) hung out with Jamie and Val as well. We went to the Year in Review improve show they were in charge of. Funny mostly. But I think I’ve heard enough Bush bashing to last until we have a new president.

Monday:

Overslept again. Had to be out of the room by noon. Thank God for baggage check. :D At this point, I was so tired that I missed the Star Trek vs. Stargate panel, but I managed to pop in for a few minutes. The best thing of the entire con was Don Davis. Throughout the weekend, the SG track members had a huge banner that had a silhouette of the original team against the Stargate, and a caption that read “Thanks for 10 great years.” We’d all signed it throughout the week, and during this panel, it was presented to the cast. Don Davis cried. I mean, the man actually broke down and started to cry. It was the sweetest thing. It just amazed me how overwhelmed the cast is by their fans. I mean sure the ballroom wasn’t standing room only, but I really think they got the message about how much we adore them. It was great.

Went to the exhibition room again. Spent money we shouldn’t have on a few souvenirs. After that, the four of us separated for the end of the year stuff in our track rooms. Good time. Really good time. Can’t wait for next year.

However, being in close proximity to 20,000 people for three straight days tends to make people ill. So, come Tuesday night, I go over to my parents for some reason or another, and the dog completely makes my sinuses act up. I had washed my hands at least fifteen times a day in ATL, but to no avail. The next day, I was hacking and I could not breathe. My doctor is a very popular man, and he’s usually booked for three weeks ahead of time, so that was a no go. I just piled up on Tylenol Cold (severe) and Sudafed. Hilariously enough, I was in bed Wednesday night (the first night Russ got to go back to his parents in about a month) and I called him cause I was so miserable and told him to ask his mom (the wonderful pack rat) if she had any medicine that hadn’t expired yet. :D They found some stuff, including Sudafed. So I told him I already had some but it wasn’t working. I picked up the box while talking to him and noticed that the Sudafed didn’t have any pseudophedrine in it. DAMMIT. THAT’s why the buggers weren’t working. I needed the REAL stuff!!! The stuff that’s illegal all over the place now!!!! Luckily, his mom had some. :D

Yeah, it’s Saturday now. I feel a bit better. But Russ caught it too. However, I was extremely proud of myself for being sick this week. I actually got up and went to class anyway!!!! Yay!!! Throw a party for Meg!!!!! *stares at Russ who’s sacked out from antihistamine*

So, after much deliberation (which is not easy to do when you’re high as a kite on cold meds, I finally managed to find the topic of my senior thesis for English. It took a very long time of thinking, but I knew I wanted to focus on science fiction, cause much isn’t written on that topic here. For that matter, it’s not even spoken about. :) So I talked with Dr. Baggett, who finally laid down some requirements for me, and since I am a Film Studies major, it was decided that I should focus on a film rather than a piece of literature text.

It took a lot of decision making, including one very loooooooong conversation with my sci fi bro while he was driving to Arkansas about what topics were portrayed in Blade Runner that I could write about. He listed several. Maybe I’m dense (or maybe it’s the cold) but I couldn’t find much when I watched the film. Needless to say, he had plenty. And his girlfriend (who teaches film in England) had actually spent an entire semester just teaching Blade Runner. Sweetness. Now to actually start writing the sucker. :D

Wow. My hands officially hurt. But I MUST prevail!!!!

Stargate ranting

SG-1: Memento Mori:

Loved it!!!! Loved it, loved it, lurved it!!!!! Finally!!!! Vala characterization!!!!

* Mitchell was shirtless. And handcuffed. Guh,
* Yay, Vala got to kick ass!
* Wow, I never realized till watching it through for the third time that we actually don’t see any off-world action. The entire thing was on Earth. Sweet!
* Mitchell was shirtless. And handcuffed. Guh.
* I loved the way Daniel was so worried for Vala. I mean, I know he’d be that way for any member of the team, but he’s kinda like her big brother. Which is why there shall be no ship there. Nuh-uh. None. Zip. Nada. *goes off to write a ficlet*
* Teal’c got to interrogate again!!! Oh, I’ve missed that!!!!! Kudos.
* Mitchell was shirtless. And handcuffed. Guh.
* Okay, who the hell designed the stunts for this episode?!?!?!? Totally kicked major Trust ass. Cam on a bike screaming down the highway, the car slipping in slow-mo. Drooled a lot I did. :D I remembered there being an interview where someone asked one of the producers how often the show goes over-budget even though they shouldn’t and the producer said, “Every time.” Yup, that little stunt is why we love you.
* It so was too a date. :D
* Vala is now officially a member of SG-1. Well, it’s about bloody time!!!
* I seriously wanna know more about Quetesh. She seemed truly evil.
* Mitchell was shirtless. And handcuffed. *dies of overheating* I wanna touch those tags the way Vala got to!!!! Oh, the tags just make a military man even more sexy. :D :D :D
* And I sooooooooo want to see the outtakes from when the rest of the team finds Mitchell handcuffed. Maybe he’ll lose his pants again next week.

SGA: McKay and Mrs. Miller:

I adore the ground Kate Hewlett walks upon. She was absolutely adorable.

* Hello John Forbes Nash episode.
* I seriously read the spoilers for this episode like, ages ago, but forgot every one except that David Hewlett’s real sister was playing Rodney’s sister. So when Carter popped on the screen, I actually squealed.
* “Greetings, salutations” etc. *snirk*
* MEREDITH?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?! *dies from laughing*
* HA!!!! They said “sorry” in that Canadian way!!! HA!!!!!
* Loved the idea of Rod. Wished we could’ve seen his reality. I would’ve loved to see a Sheppard that acts like our Rodney. However, he seemed a little….well, off from what the rest of the story was about. Yeah, he worked with the idea of the sibling rivalry, but maybe they should’ve put a more touching scene in there between Jeanie and Rod.
* Kirk!!! They mentioned Kirk again!!! Am I the only one who kinda wanted to see John actually and for real hit on Jeanie?!?!?!?!?! Oooo, the pissiness that would’ve ensued from Rodney. Actually inspired a fic idea. I’ll put the link at the end of this essay/journal entry of mine.
* The scene at the end when Rodney hugs her and asks her all the things she only wanted to hear him say made me cry. And I mean, genuinely cry. I’ve never cried on a SGA episode. I’ve cried on SG ones (Heroes and Meridian-every sing fucking time :D), but that scene was beyond too touching.
* Teyla’s got the hots for a Marine!!! Sweet!!! :D :D :D

All in all, fabulous episodes. I loved the fact that they focused on relationships for BOTH the shows in the same week, and left action and fighting out of it for a bit. Though it looks like next week, there’ll be enough action to make up for it. :D My dad actually sat and watched with me. And he actually liked. Yeah, my dad. *shifty eyes*

Good God, whataweek. :)

New fic. Probably not the best. I think I write angst better than romance or humor; and I definitely write SG-1 fics better than SGA ones. But still, had to try. Let me know what you think. Little Sister

In other news, one of my sister’s close friends teaches theatre over at Minor and he held audition for a rewrite of “The Screwtape Letters” this morning. I hadn’t memorized a monologue and really didn’t feel like going. So I didn’t. Check this out. I get a call from Eric about two hours ago, and he offers me a part. Outta the blue. I didn’t even audition! He said, “When I first met you, I just saw you playing this part.” *gushes and blushes* Weird how God works. I used to audition all the time and rarely (if ever) got a part. I don’t even show up for the audition and Eric gives me a part. :D :D :D The Lord works in really f-ed up ways sometimes. :D

End of veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery long week. Love, love.
