Qualifying Musical Preference

Oct 10, 2005 22:12

I'm trying to come up with a system to categorize musical taste.

I need to make a list of song elements, and then qualities which may correspond to these elements.  The qualities could then be, in theory, graded on a subjective scale of skill or "goodness".

Here are some of the elements of a song.  Please, if you can think of others, tell me and I will add them.
Lyrics
Melody
Compositional Ingenuity
Componential Brilliance/Mesh
Instrumentation
Mastering

And here are some corresponding qualities to match the elements listed above.  Please add any you feel I've left out.

Lyrics
Philosophical; Emotional; Celebrity; Narrative; Erratic; Spiritual

Melody
Pretty; Moving; Catchy; Harsh; Random; Ambient

Compositional Ingenuity
Familiar; Edgy

Componential Brilliance, Mesh
Simple; Traditional; Eclectic; Sublime

Instrumentation
Simple; Complex; Orchestral (Epic); Eclectic

Mastering
Unmastered; Standard; Progressive

I prefer Philosophical (or, to a lesser degree, Emotional) lyrics; a Pretty or Moving melody; Complex and Eclectic instrumentation, and Standard or Progressive mastering.  I am unsure, but think I prefer Familiar compositional ingenuity.

In addition, I also enjoy componential brilliance in this order:  Eclectic; Sublime; Simple; Traditional.

It is also worth mentioning that I frequently find lyrics to be a less important element of my ability to appreciate good music. They are still an element, but not as important as the music itself.

Examples of songs I am partial to:
Vienna Teng - "Harbor"
Emotional lyrics; Pretty/Moving melody; Familiar compositional ingenuity (I think, but am unsure); Sublime componential brilliance/mesh; Moderately Simple instrumentation; Standard mastering (I think-hard to tell without surround sound and/or headphones).

BT - "Dreaming"
Emotional (slightly erratic) lyrics; Moving melody; Familiar compositional ingenuity (again, I think); Eclectic/Sublime componential brilliance/mesh; Complex instrumentation; Progressive mastering.

And, naturally, both of these songs would rate very highly in most of these qualities, as they are very well executed.
