On Fantasy
Fantasy is a higher art.
I had never thought so before, and I think very few of us realize, but good Fantasy is inherently a greater feat than good contemporary literature. Everything that goes into writing a good contemporary novel must also go into a good Fantasy novel. In addition to this, the Fantasist, particularly if he is to be effective, must spend a great deal of time in creating the world where it will all take place.
