On Fantasy

Fantasy is a higher art.

I had never thought so before, and I think very few of us realize, but good Fantasy is inherently a greater feat than good contemporary literature.  Everything that goes into writing a good contemporary novel must also go into a good Fantasy novel.  In addition to this, the Fantasist, particularly if he is to be effective, must spend a great deal of time in creating the world where it will all take place.  With those who have an eye to accuracy as keen as myself, the very "art" of world-building can be a daunting task…

There is indeed a dearth of good Fantasy in this world, and good Fantasy should be encouraged and appreciated.  It is a difficult genre to truly master.
