of plastic gloves.

[thanks to eclair for this entry.]

[also a shout-out to louiselux who wanted to know how this turned out.]

a week or so ago my partner asked me to find him some recipes for kimchi.

i got him a couple - one with a variation for the daikon - and asked why.

he said he wanted to make his own.

and next day we found ourselves browsing through a Korean grocery an hour's trip away from our place. we may have spent a bit too much on the essentials [total bill: about php1.3k!] but having bought the needful things, we'll be making kimchi for a while yet.

notes on the things that were bought:

- Korean fish sauce = Philippine fish sauce patis, only sans MSG.

- Korean red pepper: the burns, necessitating the purchase of the next item

- disposable plastic gloves. the box said '50 incase [sic]' and we had to wonder: did that mean 50 pieces or 50 pairs? [it was the former.] aah Engrish how i love you - not.

- salted baby shrimp: like Philippine fish paste bagoong alamang, but the baby shrimp are still pink and raw, unlike in the local version where they're cooked at one point or another.

- the biggest daikon i've ever seen in my life, sized like a football-and-a-half.

- the wrong type of lettuce. /facepalm which is why, in his eyes, this first attempt at kimchi was made of fail.

the next time we make kimchi, we have to put in lots more red pepper.

lord, i looked like the mistrained surgeon from hell when i put on the gloves and started mixing in the pepper - mangled vegetables! we have a serial killer on the loose!

my partner, food
