2006 Book Review

I am starting a tradition of reviewing books every year in terms of saying what are my 10 most memorable books. If you have any books that you read that you really liked, let me know (I am thinking of Deb-linden_tree) because I love reading and finding great books is something I always try to do.

Magyk by Angie Sage

OK, so this book is definately for fans of the Harry Potter series and I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy. They take the typical fantasy elements and add a lot of great humourous characters.

We All Fall Down by Eric Walters

Eric Walters takes historical events and makes great fiction stories out of them (and he is Canadian, yay!). In this one he tells about a teenage boy estranged from his father who has to go to Go to Work day. His father is a stockbroker who works on the 85th floor of the World Trade Center...and the day is September 11. So it's all about how they become close as they try to escape from the tower before it collapses along with the other workers.

Elixir by Eric Walters

This book was great just because the issue they discussed was about something you don't think about. It's 1920s Toronto and a young girl meets Banting and Best (aka the insulin discoverers) and befriends them but then gets mixed up with animal protestors who object to testing on animals. So it's a really good tale about ethics.

How to be a Canadian by Will and Ian Ferguson

Freaking hilarious. Seriously, read this book and laugh at Canadians. Sample joke: How many Torontonians does it take to change a lightbulb? 3 000 000. One to do it and 2 999 999 to talk about what a world class event it was.

Freakonomics (don't remember the authors)

This book chronicles amazing correlations with the world e.g. there is less crime because there are more abortions. Less babies grow up in less homes without privilage=less likely to break the law. It's not directly proven but interesting regardless.

Cell by Stephen King

OK, think about this. What if a mind scrambling device was transmitted via cell phone at the same time and turned everyone into zombies that answered the phone and the survivors had to band together? How would you find people if you couldn't communicate by phone (and also since the people that manned the tv etc. probably are affected)

Deception Point by Dan Brown

Aka Da Vinci Code guy. So, what if the government in power was going to lose the next election because of the floundering space program and the opposing side wanted to nix it for money spent elsewhere....and then the current government cooked up a fake meteor that proved life on earth?

Our Dumb Century-the Onion

My favourite fake title-"Scientists find gene responsible for eating all the way to the bottom of the damn bags of chips"

Temple of the Winds-Terry Goodkind

I can't believe all the bad reviews I've read about the Sword of Truth series because I totally LOVE it. Besides there are 12 books 800 pgs each so it will take me forever to get through them.

Peter and the Starcatchers-Dave Barry

a prequel to the Peter Pan story that ties together all the elements of the story well, plus it's really funny since Dave Barry wrote it
