But it isn't marketed at the "general public" if it was it would not only be more affordable but would probably not feature nearly as many features. The more features the more you are marketing to enthusiasts and tech nerds. Particularly the WiFi functions are not something that is THAT common for the everyday person to know how to just hop on.
But at the core it IS marketed as a "Smart Phone" It has since its inception. Ever since the speech by Jobs it was billed as the "Smarter Smart Phone." Smart Phones ALWAYS carry a price for their functions. By stating right in the EULA that there will be constant access to the internet might cause roaming charges it makes it obvious that it isn't a "Hidden" charge. And thus right there for the person to make a conscious decision. Another thing that I pointed out before is research. Did they not research a product before they buy it? Again, if I were a business man who even remotely intended to go out of country, I would calculate the cost of how much my roaming would cost me and what steps I would need to take. It has been shown that ALL smart phones have this. This is why you buy a smart phone, to be constantly connected. If you are getting at marketing, the BlackBerry Pearl is marketed at the hipster crowd as well. And more recently the cheap alternative to the iPhone. Does it come with all the same pitfalls at the same cost? Totally. The international plans are a little cheaper but that is to be expected using older technology. Same item, and these are used by Sprint, Verizon AND AT&T. And yet these are not being attacked, why? Because they aren't the center of attention. "Ooooh apple is evil" That is only coming out because they are making money.
That story is nothing more than people getting into the Smart Phone arena without bothering to do their research before and after purchase. Through your arguments you have also pointed out more flaws in their story by reminding me that it IS still a Smart Phone. Toy or not. And you CAN take notes, and write email using a stylus or your finger. I have seen it done on the iPhone. Just because it doesn't run PALM OS or Windows CE doesn't mean it isn't also a PDA. It runs OSX, thus making it a PDA. Does the general public need a smart phone that does that? No. Also the "General Public" doesn't have the kind of money to pop over to other countries or drop 500 dollar x 3 for iPhones either. So that argument is totally null. If this was a SideKick or something more along those lines price-wise, I could see that more. But even those are still a bit high on the price scale for most individuals with limited income. I make good money but we still don't have enough money to afford iPhones and out of country vacations. Not to mention a Cruise to a foreign territory. This nearly doubles the price of such a trip. Again if they were smarter with their money they wouldn't have had these problems. The small business owner in particular. Businesses survive based on intelligent money decisions, obviously the iPhone was not one of them.
Oh yeah and by the fact that all other smart phones incur the same charges and have been around longer this proves that ATT and Apple didn't cook up such a scheme and that it has been the common practice for quite some time. So blame them all if you want to point fingers. =P
