That’s their fault. My Blackberry would incur the same sort of charges. I have that for work. It is their fault to not realize what they were buying. At the same time It is also their fault that if they travel to other countries to think about your cel phone coverage and what the roaming costs will be. If you are enough of a rich bastard to afford 3… Count them… 3 iphones at 500+ a pop, plus send your whole family on a foreign cruise I think you can drop a 4800 dollar bill. Obviously he isn’t a spend-thrift. Every person that I know personally that is in a situation where they will be traveling abroad and Own an iPhone the first thing they have asked is about roaming charges.
Its not Apple’s fault nor really ATT’s fault. Roaming is a fact in telecommunications. It is hardly a scam if every other product that has persistent data connect does the same thing. Its just because people that fail to take responsibility for their own carelessness like to blame it on something else. Namely people and companies that are making large sums of money.
I went to Taiwan without checking to see if my cellphone has persistent data connect. Why? Because, like most of humanity, I expect that when I power down my phone, it stays powered down. If I wanted my phone to "keep accessing data lulz", I should have to manually select that option. Most people expect that "power off" means "power off".
For that reason, these next gen phones are over-engineered. Not only that, but the fact that it isn't made clear in the contract makes it pretty shitty. They are right in what they said... to the normal consumer, when you advertise "unlimited use of web for one low price" and then charge them for "roaming internets", it's pretty shady.
Either the phone was off, and could not receive email, or the phone was in sleep and receiving email. You cannot have a powered down phone receiving email, unless you think Apple has invented some magical device that operates without power.
Some of the newer phones don't let the user put it on "off" mode. Instead, they only allow the user to put it on "suspend" mode. My phone is one of those. I can shut it off, but I've noticed times where it still does shit while it's supposed to be powered down (but only when it's plugged into the wall).
For instance, it'll display "Charging Battery!" even after I turned it off as long as it's still plugged into teh wall. And even though I turn off the phone, it'll still power back on to fire off my alarms.
Well, it sounds like the iPhone is slightly better than some newer phones because you can turn off the iPhone. Probably a requirement for the iPhone since it doesn't have a user replaceable battery.
As a side note, I carry my cell phone with me when I travel internationally. I do so because I want to be able to let people know how I am ONCE I RE-ENTER US BORDERS, in case I'm delayed or something.
During other operational times, I power down my phone. That's how I maintained 3/4 charge on my cell during my 2 weeks in Taiwan.
But if Sprint and samsung had done the same insideous shit that AT&T and Apple did, I would be at their HQ shitting bricks. :P
Well, maybe Sprint's. But only cuz it's in the same city as me.
