The title of the post pretty much says it all. I just got caught up on all the episodes I downloaded but never had the time to watch, and, whoa, boy. What can I say, except that I never thought I'd find myself liking a sociopathic character?
Big kudos to the writers, because it must be so hard to keep that balance of having Dexter be a sociopath, with all of a sociopath's tendencies, but still come off as human enough to be likable. The fact that he's struggling to make himself appear normal...hits the right note with people, I think. Maybe they're not sociopaths, but everyone has, at one point in their lives, gone through times where they've been clueless about human relationships. Everyone wears a mask or some kind, presents a different face to one group of people than they do to another group of people.
The fact that he's a sociopathic serial killer? Fascinating. But just having a hook to get people interested ("Oh, the show's about a killer who only kills other killers?") means nothing unless a connection can be formed. People watch and like characters that they can relate to on some level, and with Dexter, it's a delicate balance.
Good so far, though.
