Yo, Mac Geeks

So does anyone know Macs inside and out that they can give me some advice on what to purchase for our dedicated podcast/vodcast here at work? Our sales rep told me some middle of line machines would do what I needed, then turned around and gave me a quote for a top of the line machine that's like $4800.....not exactly in my budget. And I have to come up with a purchase order asap.
I trust advice from friends more, anyhow. :)
