the NAMBC conference in chicago on wednesday was really good even if it was really tiring. met a lot of very interesting people, some of which were also very helpful. it was a little weird, i was expecting much more of a crowd that there was, we ended up making a pretty significant chunk. if there was 40 or 50 people, 10 of that was us. very good food, some of the discussion was very interesting, and more contacts. out of everyone there, the u.s. ambassador to mongolia, mark minton, impressed me the most. however, i might be biased since his talk was the only one where i didn't have fight to keep my eyes focused and he gave us a private talk later that evening. he was really supportive of our research and very interested in everyone's project which was really neat. the trip was also good from a group bonding level.
friday's last mongolian language class was also an experience. we all got mongolian names. mine is saruul, which means bright. nikki's is nimjin, which actually shortens to ninja, which is incredibly awesome. and of course zach, ah zach. zach's name is apparently going to be "chinggis microphone." so it was a good last class with enkhe, a lot of laughing :)
chinese finals went just fine. my poetry paper is going to be a major pain, but what can you do. presentation tomorrow for mongolia, paper due monday, archaeo final tues, jean-luc interview thurs, fri pack up and leave.
i was apparently awarded the service award for this year's lambda sigma organization.
it's kind of sad sometimes to realize that there are friendships that will wither. but at least there's always the ones that continually strengthen. i think next year living in FC should be good, meet some more people, maybe become closer with catherine...and i might try to branch out a bit more in my extra curricular activities. be more active in anthro club, join CASA, join FORGE...we'll see.
i really like james stewart. he's never a perfect character. he can be naive or foolish but his principles and ideals are of the highest standard. and when he realizes the world is against him, he doesn't give up. he finds help and sticks with his values. he's very attractive, but in a nonstandard way. not a pretty boy, but someone who quickly grows on you. and his eyes...when he feels something, he feels it. he doesn't pretend. ever. he can't lie, but he would never try to. he believes in the best, and he works for it, even when that means he has to suffer for the greater good.
whatever else you are in life, if you're not genuine what's the point? if you're not yourself, you're nothing. there's a difference between compromising for others and letting them dictate you.
yesterday i rode the merry-go-round in schenley plaza with mich and mb. we were the only three on it, and it was awesome. i rode the chinese sea dragon creature thing, mich rode the dolphin, and mb of course rode the ostrich. we're going to go back again and take pictures. i love us.

i have a map of asia taped by my bed, and i really really looked at it today. from the star that is moscow to the star that is UB to the star that is beijing. i traced my finger from moscow just to lake baikal and i thought about how much land that is. there is still a chill in my soul. to know that i will cross over that entire stretch of land, and not by anything so distant as a plane. i am in love with the transiberian railway. as dumb and corny as it sounds, my soul quivered looking at that map and really recognizing. i am about to cross my final frontier.
