Yes, it's THAT time of the year again where there is NEVER enough time to read all this great fanfiction and admire all the great art.
My last (and first) time as an artist for this was so much fun that it was never a question whether I would do it again this year. The decision for a story was so much harder than last year but I finally I selected
Scav Hunt written by the wonderful
zuben_eschamali . And what luck that was!!
If you haven't read it already please do yourself a favor and do so. This story about Jensen and Jared participating in the U of C Scavenger Hunt is absolutely beautifully written. Their voices are great and the whole plot is grounded so much in reality that I was totally mesmerized (some crazy stuff happens in Chicago!! :D ).
It's so amazing and all my following blabbering will do so much more sense if you read it here:
http://zuben-fic.livejournal.com/40329.html. ;)
As soon as I read the summary the first time I envisioned playing with all the items of the scav hunt. And so I did!
I tried to think through the process of the hunting and how the participants would plan this whole thing (never did a scav hunt myself :( ).
It is about picturing what items you want to get, how to get them und where to get them. In the early stage everything is very rough outlined and planned, very simple. Very improvised. And while the hunt continues the ideas are also progressing, they get more detailed in your head and in reality.
Soooo I wanted to illustrate this in my art for the story.
For the banners I choose some photographs of the boys and merged them with their digitally sketched versions. All the items were drawn with pencil on paper to get the improvised look I was aiming for, as if the boys were envisioning them.
The aspect of progressing is apparent in the separators as well, you will see why. ;) Every part got its own separator, here pictured with its respective banner.
On to the art!
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Fun fact: the idea of using the cranes for the separators was the first one I got. Same last year: using the cornflakes as separators as soon as I read about them. I seem to have a thing for this little cute graphics.
For the items I created a batch of fun and colorful icons which I really adore:
I have to admit that SO much more was planned but I moved during this time and that took up more time than expected. Then Photoshop and my fonts decided to annoy me and make working with them impossible. But the rest of the time I had very much fun working with this story - never drew an elephant before ... or a trebuchet. ^-^
EDIT 06/23:
I promised
zuben_eschamali that I would do some art for her playlist in addition to the other art. So here it is as an late addition:
soundtrack art post.
END OF EDIT ;)
So, thank you,
zuben_eschamali for providing this inspirational story and of course
thehighwaywoman and
wendy for again organizing the Big Bang this year and doing all this hard work for us!
Can't wait for next year! :D
As always: comments and reviews very much welcome!
