it was an abrupt awakening. It had to be somewhere near 7:30 am when a slightly-overweight mid-to-late-20s woman was shaking me violently with her extremely pale hands. softly yelling something along the lines of
'cassandra, cassandra, get up! he has to be at court by 8!'
confused as hell, my eyes had barely even opened when i came to realize
i don't recognize anything around me at all.
i could see the hardwood flooring spinning through my squinted eyes, and a very tidy apartment
but these people staring at me
are complete strangers.
i sat up and the first thing that came to mind was
'i remember not having my bag last night'
a black man equal to her age walked out from the doorway to my right.
i stood up quickly, because apparently we were in a hurry.
i was barely capable of walking down the staircase to a back alley behind his apartment,
he handed his cellphone to the ghostly pale woman
'if i'm going to jail today, i'm not going to need this'
i patted myself down to find a pack of parliament full flavors in my left pocket,
and a lighter i had accumulated since leaving the bar at last call in my right
and lit my cigarette in a state of complete dismay.
where am i? how had i gotten here?
we said our goodbyes, but i didn't thank them for letting me stay on their living room futon
because gratitude is supposed to be sincere.
