holy snowstorm Batman!

There are blizzards north of here, and one where my sister lives. My sister got over two feet of snow today. She said it the wind was like needles pounding into you. She and her husband were out shoveling the driveway today, trying to keep up with the snow, miserable out in the driving wind and whiteouts.

Here we got a lot less snow. It melted mostly when it touched down for much of the day, so it became more like an ice storm. Maybe six inches of precip today--but now it is super bitterly cold. All that slush turned to thick ice with snow on top, and it is slippery out there. Most of the storm went south of us. There are warnings scrolling across the tv warning about the sharply dropping temperatures, and asking people not to drive tonight or tomorrow. I think most of the schools are already closed.

I was right--today there were a huge amount of people running to the store that had not heard anything about the impending storm until today. That's been talked about on the tv and radio for a week and a half! We had a ton of people coming in, frantically shoving things in their cart. It was a constant rush all day. I worked so hard, all my muscles are shaking and sore.

The bagger kid that looks 12 said to me, "I can't understand why people are coming in today."

"People are dumb," I said, "Every time we have a weather event, we get the storm panic where people half kill themselves trying to buy milk and beer. Once it clears up, they will all stay home."

I sent the kid that looks 12 out to scrape the sidewalks. He looked at me dubiously, and said that they weren't that bad. Yeah, I walked outside and nearly fell. Some little old lady isn't going to catch herself, she's going to break her hip and sue the crap out of us. I told him this.

He went out for a minute and came back in, saying that he was done. I couldn't see any change, and went out to check. He had just scraped the wheelchair ramp. I had to explain to him that he needed to do the entire sidewalk, on both sides of the store, and he couldn't believe me.

Finally, I convinced him to do the sidewalks properly and salt them. The baggers were whining today, but if the walks need to be done every ten minutes, then someone has to do them every ten minutes. People were tracking in so much slush the entryways flooded, and we were slipping all over even mopping things every few minutes, so we had to get out the floor buffer machine to suck up the water.

I worked ten long hours today on sore sore feet, and when we came out, the pink-haired cashier was scraping my car for me. :D Awww. I needed the help to. It was so cold, my skin was screaming after doing the slip and slide to my car. There was a ton of thick ice on it.

And I couldn't get my car doors open! I tried both sides--we both were pulling with all our might. We had to take ice scrapers to the seams around my doors, there goes my paint, and still no luck! I was certain my door handle was going to break off before that door came open--I've had them break before. There was no way to go get some hot water or anything. I was throwing myself against the doors trying to break the ice holding them shut, sometimes that works. Not this time. I just hurt myself.

Finally, at last the door groaned and creaked and slowly came open. And then I pushed the other door open from the inside, and realized I had made a terrible mistake. Cause then neither door would shut! I was out there for a half hour waiting for the car to warm enough to thaw the door latches. So frustrating!

In the meantime, I slipped off the edge of the pavement and went ankle-deep in a hole of muddy water. I tried to spray lock de-icer in the latches and it rebounded into my face. I washed my face with snow and got even more cold. My supposedly waterproof gloves soaked through. I have many pairs of gloves to switch to fortunately. I took a pic of the store's lighted tree in the parking lot with my cell.

And then when I went to back out, my car refused to move. I tapped the gas, and the car still didn't shift. My car was frozen to the ground! I had to practically floor it to break loose!

I made my way home at about idle speed, no gas required--see, I can be green. :P I am freezing cold now.

Oh yeah, if you heard someone screech about 1 am last night, that was me. As I was trying to shut the laundry room door, my clean laundry slipped out of my grasp and spilled onto the muddy cigarette slop of the ground. I had to be in bed then, didn't have any more quarters, and WAS JUST SO MAD. I salvaged what I could.

I think I'm going to lay down for a few minutes and then try to put up my Christmas tree. i got everything up all the stairs last night, but not assembled.

Where ever you are, I hope you are warm and safe tonight!
