So, I'm a member of Planet Fitness. I like the place because it's not ridiculously expensive, it has super convenient hours (though I do wish they were an actual 24-hours gym on the weekends, too), and no one is trying to push me into buying/joining classes, making me feel intimidated, and they just generally leave me alone, unless I approach them & ask for something, which they (usually) do in a very friendly & accommodating manner (which is something I wish all places did!)
I saw something a while back about some hashtag on twitter and instagram - I think it was People of Planet Fitness or something stupid like that. And it's basically making fun of the place and the people that go there.
I am so sick of seeing crap like that, and I'd like to point out two things to those assholes:
1. Those people are at least AT THEY GYM trying to do something, whereas you're sitting on your ass making fun of them.
2. The people who are taking the pictures? Um, you either have to be a member or guest of a member to be there, so clearly the picture-takers are judgmental asshats themselves.
And I'd just like to say a big FUCK YOU to those people. Because they suck. Shaming other people & making fun of them for what they wear, what they look like when they go to the gym, trying to get healthy? Yeah, fuck you. So what that Planet Fitness does a 'free pizza' night once a month and a 'free bagel' morning once a month? The people are in the gym, aren't they? And if they're there, they already bought a membership and most people tend to utilize things they pay money for. I know I get mad at my own self if I don't go to the gym at least 3 days a week b/c if I don't I feel like I am not getting my money's worth. It's not like PF does those things every day or weekly or something; it's once a month. Don't tell me that you don't splurge once in a while and have a treat.
I have thankfully not seen anyone at my local gym attempting pictures of people there, but who knows, it might happen. Anyway, what prompted this whole rant was I saw two women on treadmills in front of me the other day. They weren't wearing 'traditional' work out gear but what they were wearing looked comfortable enough to move around in. And they were very large people (and that's judging from my own quite large height/weight - they were a lot bigger than me). And dammit, I was proud of them. I was applauding them in my head because they were on that treadmill going harder than me! One of them was running - RUNNING! I was like damn, my ass can't even run like that/that fast/that long! And I was just so damn proud of them b/c fuck whatever assholes might say, they were going to get healthy.
And shitty attitudes/put downs like what the folks who post those pictures on that dumb hashtag/instagram don't help. They're what makes people ashamed and feel bad about themselves in the first place and give up before even really trying.
So fuck those people. I'm going to be awful here and make a crappy assumption, but those people are probably stupid jerkfaces and have low self esteem. Well, they likely have low self esteem; they are certainly acting like stupid jerkfaces when they do that crap. Which doesn't give them the right to be awful to other people, but I'm going to just go with that explanation. And call them out on their b.s.
