Immigration in the U.S. - Intrusive & Expensive but apparently no one cares...

Today's entry will be about immigration to the United States. I am going to be as eloquent about it as I can without sinking to a place where all I can do is scream incoherently and curse because I am so frustrated & angry with the ignorance of the populace. This post is being made courtesy of this article about the new law/crackdown on illegal ( Read more... )

Aww man, I can feel ya on this topic. My mother moved here from the Philippines (when she married my father, he was stationed there while in the military), and my husband moved here from England (when he married me). Both of them had it fairly easy as far as immigration goes, but it IS expensive. Luckily immigration lawyers aren't actually needed - but they DO prey on people moving by making it seem like it couldn't possibly be done without their help. I've also got a ton of debt added on to my student loans, since to get Matt here I quick did a trade school that I needed loans for so I could file an affidavit of support. They wouldn't count the fact that I OWN my home outright, and use that to allow me to lower the amount of income needed to sign the support paper (my father passed away, I received an inheritance, so I own my home and my car, no payments needed. The job I had only paid 7.75 p/h but Idaho is ridiculously inexpensive to live in. Matt has a degree in physics and in maths and doesn't have trouble finding work. The government doesn't care. I still needed to prove that by myself I could afford to support total cost of living that includes things like rent/mortgage in order to bring him here). So yep, all the effort and cost to get a certification that I'll probably never use again, to get a $12 p/h job, just to sign a paper, so my husband could move here.

Also, they pretend immigration is all equal opportunity or whatever, but my mother wanted to bring her sister here. Apparently for people coming from the Philippines it's a "7 year wait". So ... it's not the same for every country? Nice.
